In your opinion what depths would you be placing a jugline in this time of year, the juglines would be only for during the day, no over night. Thanks.

Need to fish above the thermocline. I think juglines are fishing, sallysue wouldn't know what fishing was if it swum up and bit him on the rump.

All of my jugs are set at 5 to 6 foot. Fish for suspended fish in deeper water this time of year.

Put them on the ledge of a flat or along a river channel.

In deeper water say 20' or so I would put a weighted jug with a hook right off bottom then one about three foot above that then one about three foot from the top. When you run them you'll know where the air is by the look of the fish caught on that hook. You can adjust your depth according.

Keep them all at 14 feet or under...hooks any deeper will be below thermocline and kill them causing waste.

Is the thermocline the same in all lakes?

Thermocline is usually around 20 foot. In deeper lakes it will go on down to 25-30.

Sorry, I tried posting yesterday or Saturday, but it froze & I had to shut down the browser page & lost all I wrote.

Thermocline runs about half depth to bottom. In 20' that would be from 10' down to bottom. 40' would be 20' down to bottom.

However, it may not apply to shallower water, such as 11 to 13' deep, as I've fished in the No Wake Zone coming out of Running Branch Marina & never encountered any problems in the summer. But I have noticed it in 15' to 16' deep waters.

If you are in an area of heavy traffic- skiers & jet skiers, they can stir up oxygen into the water. However, on the other hand, outboard motors have underwater exhausts, churning carbon monoxide into the water as well. Add a great volume of traffic during the summer.

One article years ago (7 to 15) shared of a guy rod-n-reeling for Big Blues in the summer in lakes during thermocline. He would use goldfish. He said since the thermocline was at half depth, he would set his hook just above or barely into it. He noted the Big Blues suspend themselves just above the thermocline level. And if the hook & bait was slightly lower, a big blue would make a dash to retrieve the bait then get back out of the danger zone

I did forget one thing though. There is what I call a "boilover". Not sure what it actually is, but I will give an example. Fort Parker Lake had filled in with so much grey muck & silt & they had not dredged it in ages. If not mistaken, it was in the 1990s. The depth a few years later (in 2002) was maximum 6' deep. I am talking the whole lake was no deeper than that. We had my Grandfather's Birthday party in what used to be the Bathhouse (where you showered & changed into your swimming trunks & the opposite after swimming). It hasd been converted to something like a clubroom you could rent out. It was a hot July 4th & the lake stunk. Lots of dead fish. Basically, it just boiled the fish.

That is not actually thermocline, but when a lake is that shallow & has so much muck in it, if it gets heated enough, well something like that is bound to happen.

I had always thought the thermocline was active & constantly shifting depths, until I read that article.

I remember one occasion I & a few friends went fishing on private property They knew the owners. It was a hot summer & it had many sleughs connected, even into what seemed to be a tank maybe 15' or so deep. The shallower water was fine, but the lower depth in the tank portion definitely had thermocline activity as you could tell the difference it made on the catfish. They were super sluggish.

Harvesting you say? So if you catch your limit with a rod and reel what is that called? If it is legal it is fishing. Sounds more like a lack of tolerance to me. Jug fishing is fun and my kids love it, not to mention you fill your freezer pretty quick. Also wrestling a 30 pound plus blue on a hand-held line is a hoot. Of course anything over 10 pounds goes back in the water.

Anyway:
I do as all of the above said, in the winter I fish deeper 25 to 50 feet and in the summer shallower, 10-20 feet my bait will always be above the thermocline. To me the hardest part is to keep the line tight when you drop is so the bottom bait will not lie on the bottom so I use a heavy weight. Basically a discarded 12-16 ounce soup of vegetable can filled with concrete and I fashion a piece of wire hanger as to attach a cheap carabiner to the line. Most if not all of my jugs have 55 feet of line.

I usually run three hooks spaced out every five feet.

Here is a pic of my jugs, I used tarred line as it does not tangle and white duct tape. But now your jugs can be any color, I will wrap chartreuse duct on them next time.

D- you are welcome to use mine if you like or I can tell you how to build you a dozen a dozen is a good number since one or two are always out of commission. I once had a big 30 pound or so blue hit three different jugs at the same time and he made a mess of my lines.

I am sure I left a lot out but I hope this helps, if any one of you want to know how to build these let me know, I will gladly help.

Been fishing our local lake with jug lines set between 8' - 16' deep and fished during the day for about three hours. Having trouble with Yellow Bass stealing the bait but did manage to catch several Keepers this morning. Used anchored as well as free-floating jugs; of the Keepers two were caught with the free-floating jugs in less than 10' of water. Today's Video. Fun stuff... having a Beer Batter Fish Fry later!

Used the kayak this round to put out jug lines. Managed to catch two Catfish and hooked but lost a nice Gar. Oh well, better luck next time. Jugs set around 10' seemed to get the most bites this time. Today's Video.

Fished Lake Lavon at Ticky Creek this morning using jug lines. Bite was steady with 15 Keepers; largest went 19" in size. Most went for Shad that we caught by the boat ramp. Did catch a couple of Gaspergou; used one for cut bait. Ended catching several on cut bait also! Fun stuff with most caught in 11'-12' of water with hooks set 1' and 2' from the bottom. Today's Video.

Fished Lake Lavon Saturday morning and caught six Keepers. Largest went 4 pounds; caught them using Shad.... Enjoying the nice weather, and the laid back style of fishing!

Did re-rig the Jug Lines with new line, same ones we posted in an article about Jug Line Fishing. This time, tried stopper knots above and below the drop lines. Seemed to have more hook ups this time! Today's Video.

Did some Jug Lining this morning at Lake Lavon. Put in at Little Ridge Park by the Power Plant. Baited up with Shad and then waited for about a half-hour before the first bite. Fun morning... kept three for a fish fry later! Today's Video.

You are right about it being fishing. I wish everyone was more careful to protect and not injure fish. Jug fishing and hand fishing is now legal and should not be looked down on. Saying that I have never been nuts enough to grab a sixty pound cat in the mouth while holding my breath under water.lol I quit fishing when I have six or seven nice ones in my ice chest and you could call that harvesting also but I prefer calling it eating. Most lakes in Texas have a very good population of catfish and if that does not change I have no issue with jugs.

Best way to figure it out is to run trot lines. I consider trot lines harvesting and jugs just fun to use. Only take what you WILL eat!

In order of those you mentioned

Cut shad, carp, chicken, live bait, bait soap

We use weenies in the winter when we can't find shad

So do you want heavy weight on the bottom of the line, or is it better to let it drift, if so would a 1 oz weight do it?

So, with 5ft lines, you are fishing very shallow, in the grass? I have some very close to yours, 7 ft and then some 30's and 5 70's Texoma style. I plan on setting the short ones out this Friday night, and sticking them around some grassy areas. was going to use Hotdogs and Garlic, with some Liver, but have access to some small perch, as well.

I generally use garlic weenies for my noodles first then cut shad. Only thing I like better than catching fish is eating them! Seems to me a limit on noodles is just as many as a limit on poles...

Using a slip sinker mine will fish from 2 to 6 ft deep this time of year. Once fish move back to deeper water just change out the line.

These are what I use. I have about 30 of them rigged, and over time have changed most of my depths to 7' or 10'. I use only 1 hook per line, got tired of 2 hooks getting tangled up. I use 1/4 egg sinker above swivel, and a 3/0 circle hook. Flagging jugs are pretty fun to fish with. I throw em out in 15' of water or so and usually they drift to whatever depth they're made for. Some times the 7'ers will get hit in 20' of water by suspended fish.

I just bumped my thread on how I build my juglines since they changed the law and they can be any color. I like the monster noodle design much better than the regular small noodle design.

I too like the bigger noodle design. It will tire out a 20 lb blue pretty quick to where it will head in to shallow water to rest. Here's some more detail on what I am building. I just did another dozen yesterday for another feller. 3/4" schedule 40 pvc. Do not use the dwv thin wall stuff.
The parts all from Home Depot and Academy

Epoxy in the eye screws. I fill cap about half full

Tying the leader. I use 8/0 Octopus. 125 lb braid Just in case a biggun bites. Swivels are the weakest point they will only hold about 100lbs before they pull apart.

Finished

Been a while since we fished Bratonia Park (Lake Lavon). Low water levels kept it closed for several years. This morning we put in the Jon Boat and set Jug Lines.

We baited the lines with Shad caught with our cast net. And, in a short while we had our first bite. Turned out to be a Bruiser that went just over 33" in length!

Slow but steady bite that ended with five Catfish - four Blues and one Channel. Fun stuff, Team's biggest Catfish caught to date! Today's Video.

All the above is great Info. I actually learned a few things.
That's what makes this a great place for Tips.
With that stated.
This time of year; with the heat and thermocline. Moving up an-
down.
We set shallow Trotlines. Along the mouths of Creeks.
Off the points of draws. Running into the main lake.
About. 6; deep. Mainly for Channels. Make sure waves are
pushing into the cove behind your line.
BEEF-BULL-LIVER!!!!!!!! For bait.
Good Luck

I just use a bleach bottle for a float. then I take a packaged 150' trot line and cut it into 50ft sections. then I use the clips to make leaders for hooks. I typically us size 7 circle hooks. this way when I get to a fish, I can just unclip it from the main line. or when baiting I have 5 hooks and leaders baited and just simply clip them on as the jug goes down. then I can unclip them and wrap up the line without any tangles. I do the same thing for my noodle jugs. I just tie knots and the clip goes in between the knots. ive used shad and perch for bait with little success.. however, Chicken Breast any time of year tends to be the best bait. big blues or small blues they all love chicken breast. no marinating or seasoning, just boneless skinless chicken breast straight from the store. I was skeptical at first, but it works.

It's a weight that slides to the end of the PVC tube and causes the noodle to stand upright. This tells you when a fish is on or has bit. Also lets you see the noodle from a good distance if it's standing up. I carry binoculars in my boat so I can watch my noodles from afar. Also to make sure somebody doesn't try to run my lines.

Everybody don't fish with noodles the same method. I fish mine free floating and some people weight them to the bottom. I like mine to free float with the wind and current so they will cover more water. I mainly fish flats and set them out so they will drift toward the bank. If I can drift them over creek channels even better but always toward the bank. I get more bites this way than any other method. I never leave mine out unattended. If the bite is on a dozen noodles will keep you plenty busy. It's a really fun way to stock the freezer.

Thanks for the information might give it a try but it sounds like a way to stock your freezer & I'm more of a catch & release but then again it sounds fun

More testing of the jug lines plus the pvc rig for the Versabrella Shade. Liking the jug lines; fishing partner is liking the shade. Struck out but still a great time on the water. Post.

PS: Added link concerning the color of jug lines in Texas. White is no longer required.

This round more jug line fishing at Lake Lavon. Was there on the Fourth of July and only caught one on rod and reel while kayak fishing. Had video but file was corrupted while transferring to the computer.

No worries this round, able to get the video to transfer and finished editing it! Also, still working on the fishing and side trips last month to the Texas Coast and Hill Country; added a snippet to the end of this video. Do check back periodically; hope to get it posted sooner than later!

Went kayak fishing for catfish using jug lines and shad for bait. Fishing partner along with our newest member of the Field Team - Charlie the Maltese Puppy had a great time, despite said puppy having a dunking this round. No worries... life jacket did well plus we caught five Catfish that made for a tasty dinner. Will plan a catch and cook video to show how we cooked them! I fish jugs regularly in 14-16 ft on the outskirts of a creek channel (Lake Wright Patman). Use catawba and cut shad for bait on 2/0 and 3/0 circle hooks. One hook near bottom and the other 4 feet or so above that. I only let them soak for an hour or so and hand fish between setting them. Last two times I went out, I had a limit in 3 hours or so. Maybe this will work for you too. Gig em.

Was a windy Saturday at Lake Lavon but did manage to catch three Catfish for dinner using jug lines - commercially bought as well as DIY ones. Also, caught and released a Gar. All went for fresh caught Shad caught with a cast net prior to launching.

Cold front rolled in and temps drop and rain rolled in. Gave it a week and things warmed and rains quit. Made a run to the lake for jug lining fun.

Three of us this round, took the Jon Boat and the Kayak. No Shad to catch with the cast net. Bought some at a bait shop, pricey but they do work well for Catfish!

Managed three Catfish and a Gar. Did get a few strikes and misses, then things slowed more. Decided to call it a trip... fun times!

While shad is best, don't forget perch ('gills) and others are pretty good substitutes.

True, this time of year I have a hard time catching much of anything so having a place I can buy some fresh shad(not asking for live.) would be very helpful.

Jug Line Fishing Lake Lavon Able to get the jon boat prepared for a round of jug line fishing at the local lake - Lake Lavon. Put in at Highland Park, and had a fun time catching catfish for the beer batter fish fry recipe we like. Caught seven catfish - one Channel Catfish and six Blue Catfish. All went for fresh caught shad that we caught with the cast net at the boat ramp.

It was windy but luckily able to fish the leeward side of the point to minimize time in the windy areas. Catfish were taken in shallow water - 4-6 feet, as well as further out in about 6-10 feet of water. Well within casting from shore!

Did catch and release a Crappie and a White Bass. No worries had more than enough for dinner that evening... beer batter fish fry recipe and the homemade tartar sauce still makes a tasty dinner! Hope to be back out again, especially with the new "fish finder" - Charlie the Maltese Doggie!

More Jugline Fishing for Catfish #lakelavon Was a tough start Saturday... windy and a little chilly, plus no shad at the boat ramp at Highland Park. Made the quick adjustment, and decided to head to calmer waters... Bratonia Park, and to the Branch Convenience Store for bait.

Plan was to try some kayak fishing trolling with the fly rod using a Denison Dam Dawber and Tube Fly. No go with the fly rod, but fun time catching Dinner on jug lines! We caught six Catfish - five Blue Catfish and one Channel Catfish, for the stringer for Dinner... Blackened Catfish and Shrimp Etouffee!

Had a fun time fishing with jug lines this past Saturday. Posted the video on our YouTube Channel - COAF Field Team. Here is an accompanying iFishNews Fishing Podcast to point out a few lessons learned this round iFishNews Fishing Podcast and below is the video version.

Key Take Aways:
- Have a backup plan for bait. Cooler temps and windy conditions, changed the pattern. No Shad at first. Luckily, able to pickup Nightcrawlers at a bait shop / convenience store.
- Adjust for wind, if too windy... move to calmer waters. In our case, across the cove to a leeward shoreline.
- Don't wind the jugline's line. The up and down motion resuls in a slack in the line, giving the chance for the Catfish to twist off the hook Instead, retrieve the line, keeping a steady strain on the line to keep the fish from throwing the hook.
- Circle Hooks tended to work better when the Catfish were slowly taking the bait and setting the hooks themselves. J-Hooks tended to work better when the Catfish struck hard on the first bite and then started to run. Best to have both available, and adjust as needed.
- Adjust jugline pattern starting sets shallow, deeper, and along a bottom slope and/or humps... move to the "money zone" concentrating the juglines as the Catfish tend to one of the sets.

All for now, and Good Luck and Good Fishing!

Thanks for another good set of videos.
Seeing you catch some cats has me hopeful.
Always appreciate the useful tips.
Saturday afternoon the wind was not as strong and early evening the lake was flat.
You are tougher than I was Saturday, it was cool in the morning and you did not seem to have anything keeping you dry.
I went out with my waders as temps were cool and knew being wet from paddling I would get cold after sunset otherwise.
My ramp has been way to busy to try catching shad from lately but I have stink bait, worms and have been able to catch some perch with the fly rod.

How To Make Jug Lines for Kayak Fishing

DIY video to answer the mail... how to make jug lines for kayak fishing. In this case, the jug lines we used to catch a nice Catfish the other day... See Link.

Have tried various jug lines including commercial and homemade diy jug lines. So far, liking this one. It does not flag but works well in windy conditions and is sensitive enough to see the strike.

Do give these a try! Easy to make jug lines!

Any color but orange for Texas if non-commercial fishing...

Lake Lavon Fishing | Kayak Jug Lining This Round

Back to Lake Lavon for more fishing. This round went kayak fishing with the jug lines, putting in at Highland Park. Was a calm morning on the lake when we started fishing, but later the wind kicked in.

Caught several Blue Catfish and Channel Catfish. Ended up keeping three Blue Catfish. Jug lines worked well as well as the Safety Pins for the Tennis Ball Stringer... worked much better putting fish on the stringer compared to the shower clips we used before.

Skeg worked out well on the Pelican Catch 100, too!

Bite was steady with Gar taking more like stealing our shad. But, once we adjusted the jug line sets to fish the area near the trees, the bite picked up on Catfish!

Fun trip... do check it out!

Happy Hump Day... A livestream session to detail the Tennis Ball Kayak Fishing Stringer that we use when fishing from a kayak. Originally used shower clips, and then a Viewer suggested Safety Pins... the big ones used for securing laundry bags. So far liking them better than the shower clips! Do check out the video... and Thanks for stopping by!

When you guys bait up with live Shad, on your jug lines, where do you hook them? I usually use cut bait, and have great success. Went out this morning to test out my new Grayline bait tank, and baited up live shad. Came back to 22 empty hooks, and zero fish. I hooked all of them behind the dorsal fin in their back. Should I be going through the mouth instead?

When using live Shad, normally hook in the mouth.

Regarding the irritating stolen bait problem, I may have found a solution. I ordered both magic thread and miracle thread, can't tell the difference, but it seems to hold shrimp and chicken on the hooks pretty well.

Never had a problem with chicken. But, don't think I could tie a live shad onto a hook.....I certainly wouldn't know how to, that's for sure.

Depends on the depth you want to put the bait at. I have 16 different line lengths, and various depth for hook placement on each one. If you use multiple hooks, on each line use a 3 way swivel. Keeps the fish from twisting the line all around them.

Are Your Juglines Legal in Texas? #shorts

Making preparations for kayak fishing and juglining. Had to fix my juglines to make them legal in Texas. Rules require juglines to be at least 3" wide and 6" long. Good to go now!

While at it, replaced the Name and Address Label with a Customer ID Label. Liking it much better than the old rules!

This round I take the kayak to the local lake to catch a Catfish or two using jug lines! Bite was steady with five Blue Catfish caught. Largest went 20" in length!

Been tinkering with juglines for several seasons trying to make a self-setting jugline that would be faster and easier to deploy especially when kayaking. Here is a prototype I plan to test. Do check back! #catfish #fishing #tips

Here is how I made the line holder or line stop that I use to set juglines.

Easy to set and redeploy as they are deployed like a marker buoy... drop it and go. Give them a try, they work!

Field Test Was a Success - Self-Setting Juglines Worked!

Been brainstorming ways to deploy juglines faster as well as relocate them as needed. Current juglines have taken a little too long to initially set them out as well as painful to pick them up and move them to another "better" location, especially when the bite is slow where you set them at the beginning of the day.

That said, this idea came to me one evening. And, after a quick bucket test in the backyard, I felt my brainstorming paid off! Check out the video for more!
