Isn't the taking of game by any method harvesting? It's legal and still has bag and possision limits.

Was a windy Saturday at Lake Lavon but did manage to catch three Catfish for dinner using jug lines - commercially bought as well as DIY ones. Also, caught and released a Gar. All went for fresh caught Shad caught with a cast net prior to launching.

Cold front rolled in and temps drop and rain rolled in. Gave it a week and things warmed and rains quit. Made a run to the lake for jug lining fun.

Three of us this round, took the Jon Boat and the Kayak. No Shad to catch with the cast net. Bought some at a bait shop, pricey but they do work well for Catfish!

Managed three Catfish and a Gar. Did get a few strikes and misses, then things slowed more. Decided to call it a trip... fun times!

I use to have a canoe and we would jug line cats . I’ve found it’s a lot of fun chasing those suckers , love it when they disappear under water . Thanks for sharing the pics and videos

The person I used to buy shad from here in plano switched over to guiding and no longer sells shad.
Where did you get your shad?

While shad is best, don't forget perch ('gills) and others are pretty good substitutes.

True, this time of year I have a hard time catching much of anything so having a place I can buy some fresh shad(not asking for live.) would be very helpful.

Jug Line Fishing Lake Lavon Able to get the jon boat prepared for a round of jug line fishing at the local lake - Lake Lavon. Put in at Highland Park, and had a fun time catching catfish for the beer batter fish fry recipe we like. Caught seven catfish - one Channel Catfish and six Blue Catfish. All went for fresh caught shad that we caught with the cast net at the boat ramp.

It was windy but luckily able to fish the leeward side of the point to minimize time in the windy areas. Catfish were taken in shallow water - 4-6 feet, as well as further out in about 6-10 feet of water. Well within casting from shore!

Did catch and release a Crappie and a White Bass. No worries had more than enough for dinner that evening... beer batter fish fry recipe and the homemade tartar sauce still makes a tasty dinner! Hope to be back out again, especially with the new "fish finder" - Charlie the Maltese Doggie!

More Jugline Fishing for Catfish #lakelavon Was a tough start Saturday... windy and a little chilly, plus no shad at the boat ramp at Highland Park. Made the quick adjustment, and decided to head to calmer waters... Bratonia Park, and to the Branch Convenience Store for bait.

Plan was to try some kayak fishing trolling with the fly rod using a Denison Dam Dawber and Tube Fly. No go with the fly rod, but fun time catching Dinner on jug lines! We caught six Catfish - five Blue Catfish and one Channel Catfish, for the stringer for Dinner... Blackened Catfish and Shrimp Etouffee!

Had a fun time fishing with jug lines this past Saturday. Posted the video on our YouTube Channel - COAF Field Team. Here is an accompanying iFishNews Fishing Podcast to point out a few lessons learned this round iFishNews Fishing Podcast and below is the video version.

Key Take Aways:
- Have a backup plan for bait. Cooler temps and windy conditions, changed the pattern. No Shad at first. Luckily, able to pickup Nightcrawlers at a bait shop / convenience store.
- Adjust for wind, if too windy... move to calmer waters. In our case, across the cove to a leeward shoreline.
- Don't wind the jugline's line. The up and down motion resuls in a slack in the line, giving the chance for the Catfish to twist off the hook Instead, retrieve the line, keeping a steady strain on the line to keep the fish from throwing the hook.
- Circle Hooks tended to work better when the Catfish were slowly taking the bait and setting the hooks themselves. J-Hooks tended to work better when the Catfish struck hard on the first bite and then started to run. Best to have both available, and adjust as needed.
- Adjust jugline pattern starting sets shallow, deeper, and along a bottom slope and/or humps... move to the "money zone" concentrating the juglines as the Catfish tend to one of the sets.

All for now, and Good Luck and Good Fishing!

Thanks for another good set of videos.
Seeing you catch some cats has me hopeful.
Always appreciate the useful tips.
Saturday afternoon the wind was not as strong and early evening the lake was flat.
You are tougher than I was Saturday, it was cool in the morning and you did not seem to have anything keeping you dry.
I went out with my waders as temps were cool and knew being wet from paddling I would get cold after sunset otherwise.
My ramp has been way to busy to try catching shad from lately but I have stink bait, worms and have been able to catch some perch with the fly rod.
