Has anybody even seen a thermocline yet? It has been a strange year.

I did forget one thing though. There is what I call a "boilover". Not sure what it actually is, but I will give an example. Fort Parker Lake had filled in with so much grey muck & silt & they had not dredged it in ages. If not mistaken, it was in the 1990s. The depth a few years later (in 2002) was maximum 6' deep. I am talking the whole lake was no deeper than that. We had my Grandfather's Birthday party in what used to be the Bathhouse (where you showered & changed into your swimming trunks & the opposite after swimming). It hasd been converted to something like a clubroom you could rent out. It was a hot July 4th & the lake stunk. Lots of dead fish. Basically, it just boiled the fish.

That is not actually thermocline, but when a lake is that shallow & has so much muck in it, if it gets heated enough, well something like that is bound to happen.

I had always thought the thermocline was active & constantly shifting depths, until I read that article.

I remember one occasion I & a few friends went fishing on private property They knew the owners. It was a hot summer & it had many sleughs connected, even into what seemed to be a tank maybe 15' or so deep. The shallower water was fine, but the lower depth in the tank portion definitely had thermocline activity as you could tell the difference it made on the catfish. They were super sluggish.

Harvesting you say? So if you catch your limit with a rod and reel what is that called? If it is legal it is fishing. Sounds more like a lack of tolerance to me. Jug fishing is fun and my kids love it, not to mention you fill your freezer pretty quick. Also wrestling a 30 pound plus blue on a hand-held line is a hoot. Of course anything over 10 pounds goes back in the water.

Anyway:
I do as all of the above said, in the winter I fish deeper 25 to 50 feet and in the summer shallower, 10-20 feet my bait will always be above the thermocline. To me the hardest part is to keep the line tight when you drop is so the bottom bait will not lie on the bottom so I use a heavy weight. Basically a discarded 12-16 ounce soup of vegetable can filled with concrete and I fashion a piece of wire hanger as to attach a cheap carabiner to the line. Most if not all of my jugs have 55 feet of line.

I usually run three hooks spaced out every five feet.

Here is a pic of my jugs, I used tarred line as it does not tangle and white duct tape. But now your jugs can be any color, I will wrap chartreuse duct on them next time.

D- you are welcome to use mine if you like or I can tell you how to build you a dozen a dozen is a good number since one or two are always out of commission. I once had a big 30 pound or so blue hit three different jugs at the same time and he made a mess of my lines.

I am sure I left a lot out but I hope this helps, if any one of you want to know how to build these let me know, I will gladly help.

Been fishing our local lake with jug lines set between 8' - 16' deep and fished during the day for about three hours. Having trouble with Yellow Bass stealing the bait but did manage to catch several Keepers this morning. Used anchored as well as free-floating jugs; of the Keepers two were caught with the free-floating jugs in less than 10' of water. Today's Video. Fun stuff... having a Beer Batter Fish Fry later!

Used the kayak this round to put out jug lines. Managed to catch two Catfish and hooked but lost a nice Gar. Oh well, better luck next time. Jugs set around 10' seemed to get the most bites this time. Today's Video.

Fished Lake Lavon at Ticky Creek this morning using jug lines. Bite was steady with 15 Keepers; largest went 19" in size. Most went for Shad that we caught by the boat ramp. Did catch a couple of Gaspergou; used one for cut bait. Ended catching several on cut bait also! Fun stuff with most caught in 11'-12' of water with hooks set 1' and 2' from the bottom. Today's Video.

Fished Lake Lavon Saturday morning and caught six Keepers. Largest went 4 pounds; caught them using Shad.... Enjoying the nice weather, and the laid back style of fishing!

Did re-rig the Jug Lines with new line, same ones we posted in an article about Jug Line Fishing. This time, tried stopper knots above and below the drop lines. Seemed to have more hook ups this time! Today's Video.

Did some Jug Lining this morning at Lake Lavon. Put in at Little Ridge Park by the Power Plant. Baited up with Shad and then waited for about a half-hour before the first bite. Fun morning... kept three for a fish fry later! Today's Video.

You are right about it being fishing. I wish everyone was more careful to protect and not injure fish. Jug fishing and hand fishing is now legal and should not be looked down on. Saying that I have never been nuts enough to grab a sixty pound cat in the mouth while holding my breath under water.lol I quit fishing when I have six or seven nice ones in my ice chest and you could call that harvesting also but I prefer calling it eating. Most lakes in Texas have a very good population of catfish and if that does not change I have no issue with jugs.
