Mr. Barone is one awesome man. Had the pleasure of meeting him and having a conversation with him. His article almost had me in tears as I am one of those proud Texans who are so blessed to call this place home. Thank you for this article.

Like Brian...I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Barone at the TTBC. His artistry with words is magic. At the same time, Don speaks of simple simple truths that sometimes if we don't stop and take note slide by unnoticed.
Thanks for sharing Fouzman!
Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.

Proud to be a Texan. JB & The Stagglers are one of my favorites. I've always enjoyed DB's articles.

I have never visited your great state physically.....but have done so mentally many times.I think about places I would love to visit, retire, perhaps live and Texas leads the list.Be proud and thankful of what you have as many of us are indeed envious. The image I have of your state is what lead me to this forum and keeps me here.Well done to all of you and those who have come before you.Remember, not all Californians are whacked, maybe we are just green with envy. Great read!! I was born and raised here in TX, my wife is from Cali. When we first met, she said that she wanted to move back to Cali one day (she had been here 7 years). A few months later, about the time we were getting "serious", I told her I would never leave TX. She has now lived here for 13 years and now says she would never move back to Cali. Much of her family is considering moving here, due to Cali becoming a "Cereal bowl" as they call it, full of "fruits, nuts and flakes". We "Texans" would welcome you just like you grew up next door to us. I love the fact that she is from there, so we can visit your beautiful state too. But, I'll never call anywhere else home!

Great article, thanks for sharing, kinda puts everything in perspective.
Having traveled or lived in just about every state, cept Alaska, there's no place else I'd call home, but Texas!

Im not a native Texan, and while I wasnt born here, it is where Ill die. Me too. Once I die I assure I will be buried in East Texas specifically. This place is in my blood and its just home now. Always will be.

to me the best part is how he emphasized that it's not about the size of the state or even just the great beauty of the landscape, but the people and the culture that comes with small town texas. and specifically east texas seems to have held on to those values and ideals better than anywhere else on earth. it's what means the most and why me and mine will be here always as long as i have a say in it!! god bless the original and true GREAT STATE!!!

Good article. Heard many such things over the years, just first time I've seen it put down in print. Like some others on here have said, I wasn't 'born' here - moved here in 1960 with mother and father to a small east Texas town of Paris. Left many times, military service, etc. BUT always return quickly. Folks are buried up there as will I and the wife. Texas isn't just a 'place', it's a state of mind. People here are terrific. Even the ones who come here quickly start saying 'Ya'll'....LOL, and soon develop that or some of the 'southern twang'. It's hot here, the land is flat, but the people are why other come and move here. You just have to overlook some who brag so about Texas, we just love our home and are very proud of it. Good folks, salt of the earth some say. Will go out of their way to say hello, or lend a helping hand when/if needed. Good stuff. Great read. Just hope others come to find out and come here to such a great place. Anywhere in Texas, north/south/east or west, it's all Texas and is something to really behold and see and experience if you take the time! Thanks for the article, it says a lot about our 'home'. God Bless Texas
