Yep, when I was 17 back in upstate NY fishing the Susquehanna river at night with my girl friend and two young nephew's. I was jumped by 6 or 7 teenagers that were drinking while I was loading my lantern in the trunk of her car. I yelled at her to get the kids into the car lock the doors and stay there until they left...Long story short I was able to get into the car but one guy got his finger caught in the car door while I slammed it shut and he went off beating the car up...Once I got the car started and turned around they were all lined up across the dirt road so I floored it tried to run them over...I hit two barly...I got my butt whooped pretty good over fishing...they said it was there spot...I sent one to jail the one who started it!! It was very scary night for my girl friend and the young kids watching 6 guys beat the crapola outta me...!

Also had a group of hispanic guys walk up on me. They turned out to be very friendly but it was a scary to have a group of men walk up on you when it is pitch black. Use to run trotlines out at Hubbard at night. Never been mugged or assaulted while fishing but have had some instances that made me feel uncomfortable. I have a CHL but I only carry maybe 3% of the time. If you fish from the bank at night you need the comfort of a weapon and a very bright flashlight just in case something goes down.

Did you mean 30% of the time? Otherwise, I wonder how you came up with that figure.

I'm not a legal expert but if you're putting yourself at risk you might want to look into getting a hunting license and carrying a "squirrel gun" with you. wink

This is a great idea, thanks man. I have an old 12 gauge that would prolly fit in my cooler. Nothin scarier in this world than hearing that 'click-click' of a shotgun.

Not fishing related, but back in the early 1970s my parents drove out to our farm out in San Saba County. They didn't arrive till late at night because my dad had to work late and they were coming from Denton. My grandparents that lived there at the time weren't there so they arrived to a dark house on a completely moonless night. My parents drove up but my dad didn't close the gate at the entrance to the property. He intended to unload quickly and drive back down the road to close the gate. Right after they were done unloading they were sitting in the house when a pickup truck pulls up outside. My dad quickly realizes there are three men in the truck. They sit there for a minute. Dad grabs a 12 gauge and a pistol tells my mom to stay in the house with my sister who is only 3 at the time. Dad goes outside and approaches the truck. He can see they have a gunrack and definitely has a gun on it (every truck had a gunrack back then). Driver cracks the door. Driver then ask if they could drive down the road and spotlight hunt some deer. BTW...this is in the middle of April. He can tell they have been drinking because they are all holding beer cans and he can smell it on them. Dad says no and tells them they need to leave and that they are on private property. Dad said the driver muttered something and closed the door. Dad went back up to the porch to watch them leave. The scariest part my dad says was that they sat there for a good 5 minutes in the truck before they finally turned around and left despite my dad obviously having a shotgun with him in plain sight. He was nervous because he had no idea what they were thinking. This was before 911 and better emergency response utilization. The county roads weren't numbered back then either. If the police had to be called it would have taken at least 30-45 minutes to probably find the place. Luckily the truck finally turned around and drove off back down the county road into the night.

Just goes to show ya never know what can happen even in the middle of the country.

I dont have a chl,but when I am fishing my creek spot or on a lake shore at night my stainless AMT .380 backup is in a hip holster at all times, you never know what kind of trash is gonna come up on you,the drug problems we have today can really put you in danger when someone needs a little drug money to get their next fix and you are in their stomping grounds where they hang out to do the stuff...I have found needles at several of my fishing holes.

A few years ago me, 4 other adults and 2 little girls about 9 yrs old were fishing a creek that i think comes out of Granbury. We walked about a mile of the creek and then the girls and two of the adult women decided to walk back to the trucks. I waited until I couldnt see them anymore and decided to run down the opposite side and try to scare them. After a few hundred yards i could see them and they were wispering and saying something about a guy in the creek. I walked down to them to ask what was up, then I noticed the truck parked in the shallow part of the creek with a big guy on the tailgate. He had a beer in one hand and a shotgun in the other. I told them he was probably just messing around shooting turtles and I would go talk to him

When I got about 50 yards from the guy he pulls a 22 pistol out and starts shooting the water and walking it towards me. Well I headed for the trees and the girls did the same. I could here bullets whizzing by me and him yelling something about us being chicken sh#@s . The other two male adults caught up with us and we all ran towards a barn out in the middle of a pasture. One male had a cell phone and he calls one of the little girls father who is a off duty cop and is not far from us. Mean while we hear the shooters truck start up and he sounds to drive about to where are trucks are parked and starts shooting the shotgun. I just knew he was blasting my brand new 1 ton Superduty but luckily he wasnt.

Well the girls dad shows up and gets into a standoff with the guy. Not knowing exactly where we were at and in what situation we are in he lets the guy drive off. DPS shows up and we give all info. Never heard another word about the guy. True story no B.S.
