Has anyone seen or heard of any action on the Lampasas River from Stillhouse to above Gravel Crossing yet? This is my favorite place to go during the run. Close to home. Let me know if you have any news.
I’m heading out tomorrow to check it out. I’ll let everyone know if it’s happening yet.

No matter where you go, there you are.

They were schooled up between Dana and Union last week. Guess they were waiting on some water flow or the temps to warm up a bit.

OK. Here’s my report. My daughter and I put in at Cedar Gap. We decided to go straight up Past Gravel Crossing to our usual spot. About a mile past GC. It was too shallow. We beached and decided to walk to our spot. We had to climb up a hill around a steep cliff like edge. While I was making my way back down I could see the area we usually beach and fish. Whites seem to congregate there. I noticed some beautiful deep green water and decided to test it first. I was 12 feet above the water and casted down. As soon as that sassy shad hit the water, BAM! Nice sized female fat with eggs. My daughter and I scaled down the cliff with the help of a big downed tree. We got to a comfortable place to fish. From 9:00 to 11:00 we caught about 30 whites. We took home 18 nice sized fish. We left by noon and made our way back home. We noticed not many had as good a morning, but they were catching fish. The closer we got to the lake, the less fish were being caught.
So the run has started. Not Balls to the Wall action yet, but worth investigating and hunting them down. I think it will get much better as March wears on, but I cannot complain about today. It was good.

So it was too shallow just a mile above the gravel crossing? Is that the first gravel bar, pretty severe bend in the river? Also, what size boat were you in?

I'm glad you and your daughter got into them. Fishing the spawn is pretty awesome.

I’m in a 14 ft. Flat bottom. If I put my engine up I could have drug it up and got to my usual spot. I saw one guy with a smaller Jon Boat do it.
Go past the big bend. Long straight shot and you’ll run into a sand bar that’s usually under water. That’s where we beached. Above that just around the next bend is where I got into them. Up a little further is the spot I usually beach at. [Linked Image]

Thanks for the details. I know the river's down, but years ago we were able to get a 16' boat around the corner from your "usually beach here" spot. So, I'm guessing that where you were fishing is probably about as high up as the fish go these days? Plenty of running water?

Thanks again!

Lampasas river flow is pretty thin right now. 29 cfs, but that is normal for this time of year. It is the lake level, not river flow, that determines when the gravel bars block larger boat traffic. Stillhouse is still 3 feet below conservation pool, even after the storm last Wednesday.

I went yesterday with my wife. We paddled from Gravel Crossing to the falls about 2 miles away. We only got three. I threw everything I had at them except minnows. All males. One guy filled a stringer above the falls but I’m not sure how long he was there. He was leaving about 2:30.

No joy today. Paddled up from Gravel Crossing to "usually beach here". One bite, no fish in 2 hours of fishing throwing jigs and roadrunners. (did not have minnows) Frustrating as on sand bars we could see fish actively spawning. Lake is at 620 ft vs. conservation pool of 622 ft, up a foot since before the rains. Watched three power boats negotiate the riffle at "had to beach here", but it was a near thing for all of them. River was muddy and flowing at 419 CFS, a huge increase since last week. Perhaps the bite will pick up once the river clears.

Females have arrived and it was fun today. I paddled to the falls and had to leave for a meeting but got 21. Got 6 at the first rapids then 15 in a hurry at the 2nd rapids. I was throwing a 1.0 squarebill. A couple guys were on the bend between rapids cleaning up on minnows.

Did good the on the 30th. Again paddled up to 'the falls'. Minnows was the thing. Pulled in a fish every 3 minutes until the minnows ran out. The only lure that was effective was 'sassy shad' and that only caught one. Fished from 10 am till 1. Tried to net additional minnows in the river unsuccessfully.

The first riffle was now mostly submerged and power boats had no problem getting past it. However, the river flow had decreased so now the Falls was a real barrier. Only smaller power boats could pass the Falls that day.

My daughter and I went out on the 30th and slayed them. I limited out and my daughter caught 20. Brought home 42 whites.
River was higher and I could get up to the usual beach here spot.
Has anyone laid eyes on the Lampasas after this last bout of rain. I’m planning on going up river this Sunday if it’s not to muddy. On the 30th it was stained but got cleaner the further upstream we went. [Linked Image]

I believe I saw you up there on the 30th. The sassy shad did great for my daughter and I. I believe we spoke to each other across the river. You were tearing them up with big shad.

After that heavy rain on the weekend it was pure trash on the lampasas. It is starting to clear up, but now we have more chances of rain Saturday. mad
I’m going to start working weekends so I can take off and fish Thursday and Friday.

I took my son up river today. Thought we might catch a few stragglers up river. Trolled from GC to the beach. Nothing. Didn’t look good. I beached the boat and walked past the rapids to the honey hole. First cast, Boom, a little male hit. 2 seconds later same for my son. Second cast big ole fat female.
We ended up catching 30 fish without moving. We walked and fished up past the little falls. Up and back to the boat produced approximately 100 fish. We took home 48. We released everything under 12 inches. Not a bad day, especially when I thought the run was over. [Linked Image]

Butch my experiences on the Lampasas back in the 90s and early 2000s was that they could be up there until the middle of May unless the shad really got going. With all these fronts however I bet they will be up the river for at least a couple of weeks still.

Wishing I had a boat.

Stillhouse is now a few inches above conservation pool, so power boat access to 'the falls' will not be a problem. Forecast Sunday rains failed to materialize in the Lampasas watershed, so river flow is stable at around 190 cfs. Should be clear, fish should be biting.

Have any of ya'll running up the river bumped into channel cats yet? Used to be towards the end of the whitebass channels would swarm the first two sandbars above GC. Caught 'em on sassy shad right along with the whites. No monsters just solid fryers in the 14 to 18 inch range. I am picking up a kayak today so I can join in on the bonanza up there at least by next spring.

Monday my daughter and I hit it in the morning. The morning bite was on again. We caught around 100 fish. We have fish in the freezer so we decided to release everything under 13 inches. We took home 28 nice fish. The whites are still there and I wish I was up there today.
While fishing, only one other boat came up. Practically had the entire stretch to myself again. Beautiful day spent on the river with my daughter.

I have not seen any catfish up in that area. I did see a 4 lb Gasper come out yesterday.
I would love to get some catfish in the freezer.

Think the spawn is winding down. I went to 'the falls' in kayaks on the 29th. First off, the extra water in the lake over conservation pool has killed the falls, lake tailwater now extends another 100 yards past the falls. Caught just 4 fish that evening: 11 inch white, 12 inch black drum, 13 inch white, and a 14 inch channel cat. Throwing sassy shad.

I’ve been fishing up in that area during the white run for 3 years religiously and hiked around the area from 1992.
I see people on here using “the falls” as a reference point. I have yet to see any falls. What/where are these falls. I usually fish up river from gravel crossing about 3.5 miles. I know where there are 2 spots with some faster water. Both spots hold Whites nicely. I’ve also saw a spot where water trickles down the hill and goes into the river. Not really falls. It’s it further up river or is it something else? Am I missing something?

Yeh What Butch said. I fished what I am guessing is the exact same area Butch has been fishing from '92 through the spring of 04 (I did miss the run in 03 due to OIF). Never remember seeing any "falls". Though maybe this was some insider info.

It’s getting to be that time again. Has anyone ventured up river to see if the run has started. I’ve been hearing some rumblings that whites were being caught at Gravel Crossing. I’m going to be heading up there soon, this weekend or next. I’ll post my findings here.

I got blanked today. Put in at gravel and went towards the main lake about a mile. Others seemed slow as well. I imagine fish are just as shocked by the weather 10 days ago as we are!

I think you need to go upstream about a mile. This time of year they are usually up past the big bend.

Went out yesterday, lake up to gravel trolling and picked up one white. Lots of traffic headed up that way. One guy had a mix of whites and crappies from trolling

I was up there as well. Caught 3 good sized Whites about 2 miles from GC late afternoon. Trolled back right before sunset. I caught 3 more. My daughter caught 3 or 4 and my granddaughter aught 3 or 4.
I have off all next week and will be fishing that area heavy. I’ll post a report on the conditions.

Went up past GC to my usual spots. Still not hot and heavy like I’m used to this time of year. I managed to catch 10 from 7:30 to 11:00am. I saw one other boat up there with 2 fishermen. They did a little better than I. I think they had around 15 apiece.
I kept 4 that were 14 inches or better for dinner that night. (Delicious) The others I took pictures then released. I’ll be up there Friday and Saturday if the storms tonight don’t hurt the river. I’ll let y’all know how I did.

Seems like this is the time of year to revive this thread. Anyone been up past the gravel crossing and get into any fish? Headed up there tomorrow if all things go as planned.

I’m visiting my parents that live here in Killeen. They live 10 min from Cedar Gap ramp and from the gravel crossing.
