Has anyone seen or heard of any action on the Lampasas River from Stillhouse to above Gravel Crossing yet? This is my favorite place to go during the run. Close to home. Let me know if you have any news.
I’m heading out tomorrow to check it out. I’ll let everyone know if it’s happening yet.

No matter where you go, there you are.

They were schooled up between Dana and Union last week. Guess they were waiting on some water flow or the temps to warm up a bit.

OK. Here’s my report. My daughter and I put in at Cedar Gap. We decided to go straight up Past Gravel Crossing to our usual spot. About a mile past GC. It was too shallow. We beached and decided to walk to our spot. We had to climb up a hill around a steep cliff like edge. While I was making my way back down I could see the area we usually beach and fish. Whites seem to congregate there. I noticed some beautiful deep green water and decided to test it first. I was 12 feet above the water and casted down. As soon as that sassy shad hit the water, BAM! Nice sized female fat with eggs. My daughter and I scaled down the cliff with the help of a big downed tree. We got to a comfortable place to fish. From 9:00 to 11:00 we caught about 30 whites. We took home 18 nice sized fish. We left by noon and made our way back home. We noticed not many had as good a morning, but they were catching fish. The closer we got to the lake, the less fish were being caught.
So the run has started. Not Balls to the Wall action yet, but worth investigating and hunting them down. I think it will get much better as March wears on, but I cannot complain about today. It was good.

So it was too shallow just a mile above the gravel crossing? Is that the first gravel bar, pretty severe bend in the river? Also, what size boat were you in?

I'm glad you and your daughter got into them. Fishing the spawn is pretty awesome.

I’m in a 14 ft. Flat bottom. If I put my engine up I could have drug it up and got to my usual spot. I saw one guy with a smaller Jon Boat do it.
Go past the big bend. Long straight shot and you’ll run into a sand bar that’s usually under water. That’s where we beached. Above that just around the next bend is where I got into them. Up a little further is the spot I usually beach at. [Linked Image]

Thanks for the details. I know the river's down, but years ago we were able to get a 16' boat around the corner from your "usually beach here" spot. So, I'm guessing that where you were fishing is probably about as high up as the fish go these days? Plenty of running water?

Thanks again!

Lampasas river flow is pretty thin right now. 29 cfs, but that is normal for this time of year. It is the lake level, not river flow, that determines when the gravel bars block larger boat traffic. Stillhouse is still 3 feet below conservation pool, even after the storm last Wednesday.

I went yesterday with my wife. We paddled from Gravel Crossing to the falls about 2 miles away. We only got three. I threw everything I had at them except minnows. All males. One guy filled a stringer above the falls but I’m not sure how long he was there. He was leaving about 2:30.

No joy today. Paddled up from Gravel Crossing to "usually beach here". One bite, no fish in 2 hours of fishing throwing jigs and roadrunners. (did not have minnows) Frustrating as on sand bars we could see fish actively spawning. Lake is at 620 ft vs. conservation pool of 622 ft, up a foot since before the rains. Watched three power boats negotiate the riffle at "had to beach here", but it was a near thing for all of them. River was muddy and flowing at 419 CFS, a huge increase since last week. Perhaps the bite will pick up once the river clears.

Females have arrived and it was fun today. I paddled to the falls and had to leave for a meeting but got 21. Got 6 at the first rapids then 15 in a hurry at the 2nd rapids. I was throwing a 1.0 squarebill. A couple guys were on the bend between rapids cleaning up on minnows.

Did good the on the 30th. Again paddled up to 'the falls'. Minnows was the thing. Pulled in a fish every 3 minutes until the minnows ran out. The only lure that was effective was 'sassy shad' and that only caught one. Fished from 10 am till 1. Tried to net additional minnows in the river unsuccessfully.

The first riffle was now mostly submerged and power boats had no problem getting past it. However, the river flow had decreased so now the Falls was a real barrier. Only smaller power boats could pass the Falls that day.
