In essence, the original steering that came in the 4x4 diesel trucks thru early 07 was ok, but undersized and due to the heavy front end, would wear quickly.
In 2007, Chrysler had a service letter to dealers stating that if a customer complained of DW, reset the tire presure to max allowed by tire manufacturer and inspect overall condition of front end, make necessary repairs and return to customer. If it came back again with complaint of DW, install the update kit that was basically the C&C 4500-5500 steering. HEAVY DUTY COMPONENTS.
There have been a few recall notices about the update kits since, mostly related to the possibility of a poor front end alignment being performed and causing the left side rod end to be put into a bind which could lead to fracture.
Ram has recently decided to redesign those components with a fail safe built in so that it will be impossible to adjust the front end to the point to where the rod ends can be put into a bind.
If you have the old original components, I would suggest you put aftermarket adjustable track bar, rod ends, shocks..
If you ahve the updated suspension, take it to Ram, they will do the update for free.
DW can be caused by things not related to bad suspension components as well...
D rated tires on a diesel is a MAJOR contributor to DW. The D rated tires do not have a ridgid enough sidewall to handle the cummins. You MUST run E rated tires on the front end. Also, run the air pressure at the upper end of the tire specs on the front. a good set of Bilstein shocks are needed. Put a Steering Box Stabilizer on it.
Remember, the truck is 14 years old.. time to show it some love..
