Any Idea what the biggest Redear is in Dunlap or any other water body in Texas?

Biggest redears are in Lake Austin and other Upper Colorado waters and T-Bend and some of the other SE Tex waters.

"Jagg" is right about the Austin area lakes having the biggest Redear. The State record Redear came out of Lady Bird Lake back in 1997. It is 14" in length and weighed 2.99 Lbs. Dunlap also has some huge Redear as well. I feel that there are Redear in the three pound range in both the Austin area lakes (Colorado River) and the Guadalupe River lakes(Dunlap,Mcqueeney,Placid).

I'm renting a house for Spring Break about 1/3 mile upriver from McQueeney, and would love to get my two boys on a fish or two. They will be fishing from the dock (no boat or yak), and I would love some pointers if you wouldn't mind. I don't know the river at all, and they would be thrilled with catching anything.

The Gills should be starting to get active during Spring. You should be able to catch a few from your dock. Acadamey has some ultra light combos from $20.00 to $60.00. Six pound test line,size six cricket hooks,size five shots and a carton of live worms and your boys should do pretty good. Usually the Gills will start staging under docks late spring,early summer. Fish off the bottom. Hope this helps out some. Good luck and enjoy the Spring break.

Thanks, Banker. I've got some good light spinning combos that should do the trick, and I'll make sure I'm good on the shot and hooks before we head out. Any chance at a decent size catfish if I put some bait on the bottom with a bigger rig??

Yes Sir. You have a super chance on catching a Catfish. I have caught a lot of Catfish using a plane old worm fishing off the bottom and even with a float. The biggest Cat I caught on a worm was a 15 lb Blue off of Lake Dunlap. If I want to fish for just Channels or Blues I rig up for them and use cheese/punch bait for the channels and cut shad for the blues. I also use heaver tackle.



Side Note. As for worms and UL tackle. You never know what you are going to catch using worms. Just about any fish loves a night crawler. Me and my friends have caught and missed a lot of HUGE fish while fishing for Sunfish.

I hear you on never knowing. Learned that lesson in the Galveston surf; hooked into a 40 inch bull red with my bait rod and 10 pound test in 18 inches of water. Got him in, but it took a while.

I think my kids will enjoy catching anything, but would love to see them hook up with something that puts some bend in the rod. I'll bringer a heavier set-up along with the light rods for them.

Any place to buy bait fish, or do you need to catch them yourself?

There is a place in Mcqueeney called the bait bar. It open at 10am. I heard they sell minnows. The store is on FM 725. I seldom use minnows. When I do I usually buy some feeder fish at Pets Mart or some other pet stores. If we get some steady warmer weather the gills should be a little more active and may move into the docks. Also Mcqueeney has a nice population of Channels and Blues.
