If you are lets say throwing a 1/2oz jig with a craw trailer you can slow the rate of fall by decreasing the weight of the jig and by adding a larger trailer that gives the jig more water resistance. Good trailer to use is a gambler ugly otter, full size brush hog bitter in half, missile baits d-bomb Throw these trailers on a 3/8oz jig where you would fish a 1/2oz or heavier jig to get a slower +1 and chunk style trailers will help slow the fall also

Use heavy mono and or you can add an additional skirt to the jig. +1 on the mono, and moreso if the water is ugly. It's a trade-off however, as you (obviously) lose sensitivity. But I've gotten to prefer mono if I'm pitching docks and skinnier trees for that very reason. When say, counting down from :20 on bridge pilings I won't use anything but flouro. My 2 cents.

I have many leather bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

I skirt my own jigs, so to make them fall slower without putting a ridiculous size trailer on it i put a bulkier 80 strand skirt.

Use a jig with hair (instead of silicone/rubber) and a pork trailer. Could add some Gink or other flyfisherman floatant to the the hair jig.

I can answer that. Let the fish tell you In all seriousness, I've gone as light as 3/16 oz. this time of year. But typically, I'll throw a 3/8 oz with a larger trailer. ^^^ this. I prefer 3/8 oz jigs in the winter months but have been known to throw a 1/4 oz too. But, heavier cover can dictate the size jig too.
