We've invited someone from the Corp to post their stance on Six Old Geezers.

So far, no COE takers.

Ax, that is exactly what I was told by other locals while up there last Sunday! I doubt they will respond, they have a different agenda and their comments wouldn't change a thing, so they will hide under rocks.

I don't think it's as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Also, the corps built the lake for power generation, that's the bottom line. I don't see how you can blame rainfall, every stock tank within 10 square miles is brimming with water.

stock tanks dont hold near the amount of water or surface acres of a lake. if you dont think it is bad make a trip out and just check the ramps.

Recreation is officially part of the lakes purpose (declared by Congress in 1988).
I have seen pictures of my Great Grandfather (and his brother's) and family in Denison/Sherman area, that fished for big catfish in the Red River in the 1910's, prior to the Dam's construction.

The lake was originally created for Flood control (lots of flood issues prior to the 1940's down stream). Power generation wasn't added until 5 years after the Dam's completion.

Following is from US CORE's own publication.
http://www.swt.usace.army.mil/Locations/TulsaDistrictLakes/Oklahoma/LakeTexoma/History.aspx

The Flood Control Act of 1938 (Public Law No. 761, 75th Congress, 3rd Session) authorized funding for the Denison dam, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers set up the Denison District Office in June of that year. The first Commander was Captain Lucius D. Clay.

However, ***recreation is officially added as a project purpose by congress in 1988.***

Construction of the dam was completed in January 1944 at a cost of $54 million. The installation of the two generators was completed in September 1949. Initially Lake Texoma was authorized for flood control, hydropower and water supply. Recreation was not officially added as a project purpose by Congress until 1988.

For those launching at Highport, the ramp is usable (especially for me) but be aware that you probably want to use the slips farthest away from the ramp for docking. Here is a progression of the depth at those slips....taken today:

Fishall, that is good info. Also, once you launch you want to stay close to the boat slips by the restaurant. It's about 8 feet over on that side.

Anyone who doubts how bad this is getting should motor down to Wood Island and see the SOLID ground connecting Oklahoma and the islands.

ATVs are now driving across what used to be a cut through to get onto the islands and ride around.

The activity of the US Tow boat on the lake is another indicator of the lake level.

There are now sand bars out in the lake off the bank of the Boy Scout Camp.

I've fished Texoma for over 15 years. I know everyone who fishes has 'common sense'.

However, my advice to those who are not intimiately familiar with the lake.....STAY IN THE RIVER CHANNEL laugh

There are stumps 1 inch under the surface and those rocky points now extend out a significant way......and are not always visible.
