What do you think are the most dangerous lakes in Texas and why? It can be stumps, low water level, boat traffic, etc.

Lake Lewisville hands down. Idiots, idiots and more idiots. Hubbard a close second with the traffic and low water. Many hazards out there that people aren't aware of.

As far as west texas goes...Alan Henry with a crowd is a death trap.
And a low amistad is right there with it. You'll have to check your pants when you see some idiot flying across the main lake is his brand new ranger but can't stay in the channel. That lake can go from 80 ft to 2 ft reaaaal quick.

Lakes aren't dangerous for the most part, people who have little common sense, well that's a different story.

Welsh can be pretty dangerous. Between the fog & zero visibility in the mornings.

Then you have killer stumps & floating logs everywhere.

Lake Travis has long been known as one of if not the most dangerous Texas lake as far as deaths:

The amazing part is people actually putting their boat up on plane and running in zero visibility in the fog. I mean Really. I have a GPS that I can use for navigation too, but I cannot see the other boats in front of me. There is absolutely no way they could stop in time if they overtook another boat idling down the lake. At Welsh, I idle around the 1st point to the left and start fishing in there until the fog lifts just for that purpose. Then listen to boats run by at 50-100 yds away that I can't even see and shake my head and pray they don't kill somebody or themselves.

Set the hook first, ask questions later!!!

Experienced it myself last weekend. Wind wise, Falcon with a north wind is killer if youre on the main lake or down south. Lewisville is absolutely horrible during the summer as well with all the cabin cruisers.

I don't know if it's the most dangerous, but Livingston probably intimidated me as much as any lake. It's huge, wide open, and generates big waves in even a moderate breeze. Add in stumps everywhere and it seemed pretty dang dangerous to me.

Leaving the Pavilion or Twin Dikes at Rayburn in anything short of a small yacht in a strong NW wind seems like a suicide mission. We drove across the dam one day with a 30 mph NW wind, gusting to 45, and from the look of the waves crashing onto it you couldn't have paid me enough to try to make the run from the Pavilion to Veach. It was an awe inspiring scene.

Anyone who has ever seen party cove the first week schools out. . .they know. There's no lake more dangers in terms of drunks, idiots, wet fleas, underaged drivers, and yuppies with boats they can't safely drive. People who survive multiple summer trips come back with shellshock.

In all seriousness, it is almost always the #1 lake in the state in terms of drownings as well. It's a deathtrap in the summer.

Lewisville in the summer for sure. I'll second Welsh as there are alot of floaters and sumps right under the surface and within the last year or so someone put rebar on some of the stumps on the main lake which now are just under the surface. So watch out!

I saw two boats running on plane on the north end of Welsh two weekends ago. YIKES!

Pinesjunkie,I cannot believe someone was running in Kickapoo. Above the bridge?

Yeah, you can run the powerlines and a couple of other spots. There are a handful of folks that can run the other stretches but, for me, it was always a tight pucker-factor. The satellite pictures from 2011 on Google Earth, when it was really low, show why. smile

I have to agree that Lewisville is one of the worst for idiots. Palestine for stumps, so too is Fork, Toledo Bend, Tawokoni, Big Sam, Falcon, Amistad. For wind, Lewisville, Texoma, Falcon, Amistad Big Sam and any other body of water that is not protected.

Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Locals and familiars have run the Kickapoo channel for as longs as I can remember as long as the water was up, I grew up out that way. But I can understand why some would get nervous about it, it does look intimidating. As far as running wide open under the bridge, I have only seen that a few times and if a GW saw it going on it would be paid for dearly.

All I know every week someone drowned around here. Even grapevine.
Tawakoni took my dad in 1989.
At joe pool they had life jackets to use at lynn park. after 1 week 22 were stolen.

Conroe has it share of idiots too. Any of the big lakes are nasty when the wind blows. To many stump mine fields to list. I've bent prop and or shafts on Rayburn, Conroe, Fork, Toledo, choke and Lake Corpus Christi off the top of my head. The north end of lake Corpus Christi going up the Nueces River is not for the weak hearted. Rayburn above 147 with low water is not easy. I would say Lake Texanna but you can't get going fast enough to hit anything hard enough to do to much damage. Every time I drive over Texanna look at all those stumps and can't believe I had a boat in the middle of that [censored] in the 80's fishing for an 8 dollar trophy.

Thanks, Billy

Palestine for boat damage any day.

And I too have seen people run north of the bridge, I am idling as soon as I leave the power lines. Still managed to get stuck more times than I can count.

Surprised no one mentioned choke canyon wind has sunk boats at the ramp even .second have you seen the size of those gators ? Wild hogs , javelinas and every poisonous snake you can think of at the ramps and on most every bank there . Once i get in my boat i dont get out . Only good news is you wont see any skiers or jet fleas on this lake no one is that crazy!

Also +1 on falcon a guy was killed there and fisherman have been held at gunpoint .

Yea. . .how many people have you heard of ACTUALLY being killed by the gators or snakes or pigs around Choke? And how many people have you heard of ACTUALLY being killed at Falcon? The one guy on the jet ski that the cops still suspect was murdered by his wife?

Yea they both sound way more dangerous than Lewisville, which has killed at least 27 people since '04. Those 27 are just accidental drownings, they don't account for all the other bizarre ways people find to die out there.

I'm not trying to start a pissing contest but people shouldn't be afraid of hearsay and nonsense. Lewisville kills people, Falcon and Choke very VERY rarely do. I would be more afraid of getting accosted around Joe Pool than Falcon any day of the week.

High north winds at Falcon can humble even the most experienced anglers, been there and done that.Waves crashing against the dam is something to remember for a lifetime, always be careful on this lake in high winds,it can and will take your life.

Boy you are really one upset little fellow over this ha little Timmy . Fact is maybe lewisville has had more people die than choke or falcoln . But I know this I would probably go in any cove at lewisville I won't go in just any cove in falcoln especially up the salado . Do they have a highway patrol boat that monitors lewisville ? They did at falcoln ! And I would probably get in the water and cool off at lewisville there is no way I'm swimming at choke. Like I said people around here are know these things . That's why you don't here about it because we know better . Doesn't mean the danger level is still not there btw I love it when someone on the TFF always says not trying to start a pissing contest knowing dam well and good that's there whole intention . (Internet hero) sorry for everyone's losses of loved ones at lewisville that sux! God bless and fish on

Absolutely Conroe in the summer. Idiots on jet skis dart in and out of stump fields and pleasure boats have no respect for other boaters. Livingston is really bad in windy weather.

Fish Falcon several times my main place was in the back of salado, fish back there 3 months after guy got shot and most trips down there until water got to low! Its not bad on falcon at all, total bs on most stuff and other stuff could have been avoided with common since. Lets not act like you are going to war when you go to falcon only thing to worry about is the wind!

A big north wind on falcon is one of the scariest things i've ever seen in my life. Almost spent the night in the Sallinais (sp) one time because of a front that blew in at the end of the day that wasn't supposed to come in till around midnight. Toledo Bend is scary too because of all the stumps and the fact that you HAVE to run the boat lanes no matter how the wind is blowing, but i've never seen waves like the ones I did on Falcon.

Ray Hubbard, Lewisville, Austin - bounce a 1oz jig off of one of those fancy boats and they go away, stick a crank bait in a jet flea'r and they go away too!
Falcon and Amistad - Stay out of the obvious coves that Americans do not belong in!
Choke Canyon - I have been swimming there and those gators have never bothered me, I am more afraid of the Tarantulas and Scorpions!
Tawakoni - Avoid the tweakers and don't buy what they are selling!

Rayburn gets my vote because mother nature can change it from nice to nasty in about 1 second!

Livington and Conroe. Livingston is a big bowl with stumps, and Conroe has so much boat traffic a calm day will beat you to death.

I've been on all the lakes mentioned here many times. None is worse than lake Austin in the summer when lake Travis is too low for people to launch. The number of times I've had to reel up my line when making a 20-30 ft or less pitch to reeds or some other structure because a boat decided there was more room to run through there on plane than the rest of the lake is crazy. Then there all are the wake surfing idiots throwing huge waves slamming everything in the water all around. It is actually easier to run in 6-8 foot waves on Choke Canyon or Rayburn than through the chop on Austin this last summer. I've done all three.

I no longer fish Austin in warm water and weather because it is just too risky/uncomfortable. Even at night can be risky with the number of boats running around without navigation lights. The fishing is great, but the non-fishing boat drivers are plain nuts.

Your right riverdogbone these internet heroes don't know anything about choke the reason that there's no accidental drownings at choke is that people aren't dumb enough to jump in the lake with those monsters lurking every where and there's no telling how many people drown at falcon that nobody hears about

They all get bad with the drunk ski boats! Conroe is horrible because of the bulkheads, and ski boats, and dumassis. But when the wind blows just right, any lake can get deadly. Our 2nd day on Waco this last October we had the first front of the year roll in and that little lake produced 4-5 ft waves. Needless to say I don't want to be in a nitro again lol.. But with that said don't wait to late to beat the weather. Get off the lake when its gonna get nasty!! Worst for me was Livingston in feb. took two over the bow of the infamous champion! It was just down right nasty that day!! Gotta say that's the only time but riding the back of waves that big sucks...

Welsh will be one this weekend if people do not be extra careful. There will be at least 4 tournaments there this weekend. There will be those that think they have to beat somone to a fishing hole and run the lake with GPS in the fog. This could be a disaster! Please use common sense!
