last 3 post have nothing to do with this thread.do not post unless you have info pertaining to the op. use your PM If you wanna go that far over half the thread doesn't have info pertaining to the op... 1. Please keep the topics in the main forum areas fishing related. There are some instances where we allow posts outside topic, but if you find that your post was deleted or moved, it is because we deemed it inappropriate to the section in which you posted, or it was in violation of other rules in this section. We have set up an Off Topic section for open discussion - please post your non-fishing related comments there.
8. We promote a friendly atmosphere for anglers to exchange ideas. Differences of opinions are welcome and are an important part of this format. We do not, however, tolerate those that try to start an argument with every post. If you are looking to agitate people, simply to get a response, or if you are a troller, this is not the place for you.
Was posting that remark really necessary? Its Open Saltwater Discussion, if we're in the wrong leave it to the Moderators (unless your brushing up to be one). But the discussion went in the direction of rigs, specific to reds and it just so happens MTPockets offers good rigs. Really its a forum for discussion... If we all went to PMs we'd just email people and no one would share information...

Hey Freefall, Bullbuster seems to be thinner to me, but it is probably about the same size. It does hold up well to bulls on the pier.
Figure I would throw the bull thing in so it will still be pertinent to the topic.
What I want to know why such big hooks, I would think a 1/0 or 2/0 would work well. How big of a bait are you throwing out there?

I have found that the 10/0 team catfish circle hooks work quite well. I'm sure others do as well, but the larger circles seem to be preferred. As far as bait size, I use some pretty large baits at time. Cut mullet and shad are my 2 favorites, the cut mullet I was using this past weekend was only about 7-10 inches long while and I would cut/use it in halves. I've used bigger baits depending on what I catch/buy.

Pferox I use bigger hooks to keep the gaffs and other fish I don't want from taking the bait. Plus it lessens the chance they swallow the hooks. I use smaller ones but when I'm chasing Big bulls I use big hooks and I have hooked the occasional shark on those rigs as well. I'm going to get me a spool of bullbuster and test it out.

I always fish Texas city and Bolivars Jetty. I have not had any issues with spiderwires 30lb braid. Except once but that was because it was old line thats seen a lot of water. Anywho, 30lb braided main line with 50lb mono as the leader. I do a fish finder rig.
Bait fresh caught mullet!!! smaller ones just throw out alive, bigones cut bait. If I catch croaker on another line ill use that as cut bait.
I see a lot of people buying crabs but to be honest I havent seen anyone catch a red off of them. I know its very very possible though!
and like everyone else says, Big hooks are the way to go. I use both circle and regular hooks. Both have their pros and cons.
Can one become a master at fishing? Pshh... yes...

Dunno, I can't get myself to go past a 5/0, and that is tied on with shaky hands. In the back of my mind I have this voice saying that my gear isn't heavy enough for a bigger hook. lol I am sure you will like that line, what lb test, and color did you order, just being nosey.

One thing is if you can only find large mullet(10-12 in) you can still use them. The bulls somehow find a way to fit those in their mouths.

I was on a blue water trip once in Fl. and the first mate taught me how to fillet out the back bone on dead bait, keeping the tail intact, it has more movement when trolling and in current.
When I think about it, I do that to mullet and have had great results.
Biggest thing about big baits is you have to let the fish eat it, sometimes that takes a while, that is where a bait runner with a very light drag on the free line setting is a big help.
