Use good hooks I like the gamakatsu, I normally use 6/0 to 8/0 depends. For some reason hooks sizes aren't standard which makes ordering them online a pain. Get some good leaders, and don't try and muscle them in use your drag. Line is a personal preference my Penn 209's have 20lb big game never have broken.. I use cut mullet whole mullet and croaker or cut whiting.

I have been using Bullbuster, and it casts better to me than big game on my 209.
Just a note, my PB bull was 40 inches, I caught it on a #1 Owner Mutu thin wire. Granted it was totaled when I brought it to the net, but it did do its job.
Herbert, were you using circles? I seriously think they don't work well on clipped rigs, better to snell those, cut the pre-made leaders from the rigs off and attach them to the existing swivels.

Had to google bullbuster lol. I never heard of it is it thinner than biggame? I have a few with cajun line 20lb as well it stretches a little more than big game. I was thinking about trying the Ande next. I ordered couple momoi leaders 60lb. I still like my own just been to busy/lazy to make them.

we fish for bulls from the packery jetty.our equipment consist of abu 6000 spooled with 100# powerpro 7ft mh rod.hooks are eagleclaw 5/0 kahle hooks.we use 2 different rigs. first is a 3way rig with 25#mono for the drops.one for the hook one for the weight.second rig is weight on bottom then 6in up tie first hook with polamar knot on the main line then another hook 8in up with the same knot.as for time of day, anytime, you never know when the school will come thru.

I was thinking about trying the Ande next. I ordered couple momoi leaders 60lb. I still like my own just been to busy/lazy to make them. I think it is much stronger for the size, 15 is almost the same strength at 17 or even 20. It is a little stretchie, but not as bad as cajun. It has fantastic abrasion resistance, IMO. My go to line was Ande Premium, and Ande Monster in 20lb or better for heavier set ups. But Bullbuster is a lot cheaper and is quite comparable to Ande. For my lighter, inshore rods that I throw artificials with I like Sufix Siege it is a lot thinner, but it is kind of unruly around sharp stuff. I'll skip braids that's a whole nother ball game. lol I actually think Cajun Red Lightening, the high abrasive stuff is better than Big Game, although it can get a little wireie. I got burned on Big Game, although I will use it once in a while when I can't get anything else. I had 12lb Ande on one rod and 20lb Big game on another and the Sheep Head were running under the pier after hookup, everytime Big Game came out shredded, and the thinner Ande brought em to the net. I use ANDE Premium in 80lb, Pink, for leaders, tough stuff, great color, have brought in small sharks on a circle hook with that line. Sorry about the long post, but I have been fighting with line for a long time, and to be honest with you it always came down to Ande being the best choice for me, now that I found Bullbuster, I feel they are interchangeable, which is nice since I like to have a few different Hi Viz colors on my pier gear.

Oh yea, if you never tried it, get a spool of pink. For some reason, it seems to be tougher than the other colors of the same line, might be what they use to tint it, don't know.
I've used Hi Seas line also, it is OK but there are better ones out there IMHO. (Sorry Bill)

I make a rig that works pretty good (everybody is calling it my "Jimmy Rig"), this one is actually for slot fish. It combines a fish finder rig and a double rig, I add 6 extra beads between the bottom of the slider and the swivel on the leader to help keep spider weights from tangling the leader in rough surf, although sometimes the surf is just too bad and nothing will help. For ones I make for myself, I snell the circle hooks on to the leaders and clamp them on to the swivels, it seems to have more positive hook ups. Lengths are dependent on how and where you fish, component sizes seem to be critical to keep the tangling down in surf conditions, if anybody is interested, I can list the components, let me know.

Tying on 80 to 150lb leader between regular line and rig might help, dunno, maybe 50 or so yards, but that knot is tough on level wind gear.
