Glad you had something pull on your line, that boy looks happy!
And Tom is just like that, He likes to front boat Larry, but he is a great teacher and a big help to beginning catfisherpersons.
What has happed to you does not define who you are-
HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!

Well, I was able to make it out again last night, finally!
Went to Little Ridge on Lavon lake, for some night fishing.
There is a finger that goes out, and from what i understand good fishing due to the power plant oxygenating the water.
Went to the southside of the finger, close to the tip. It was damn windy, but it was in my face.
Wind - 9 MPH in my face Time - 12 am fish caught, fished from 2030 - 0100 Bait - Cut Shad, Liver, CJ's Punch bait
We caught about 9 fish, 6 keepers. 1 on liver, 1 on shad ( 4in shad, tail cut off, slits in the body, descaled), and the rest on CJ's (I will def start using more punch baits)
Best choice was to wear gloves to hook the bait, and also form the punch bait around the treble hook. The Treble hook with a little spring around the top to hold the bait worked best for CJ's.
Fish started to bite just before midnight when the wind died to about 4 MPH, then it was hard keeping the lines in the water with bait and tending to my sons poll and his friends pole. It was fun. Ive had the best luck in this area so far, and plan on fishing the general area more and trying different times of day.
Ive always had issues with shad as bait but i think i figured something that works for me. i cut the tail off and you'll notice they will steadily and slowly bleed from there. Then I do about 2 slits vertically across the body and hook them just behind the head.
We only caught one cat like this, but it was the biggest of the night and my son caught it on his pole.
Im thinking about trying Team Catfish Dead Red Spray, and finding a really good punch bait. Recommendations are highly welcomed!

Does anyone use live shad? Or just perch or minnow. I know shad die pretty fast. The shad do die pretty quickly but you can also throw them on ice after netting them and use them as cut bait. Perch, drum, carp buffalo can also be used well for cut bait. The info above about wind in face from the bank and windblown points is definitely spot on. If I could add to that, in general the wind plays a big role in picking what part of the lake to fish. An example would be that if the wind has been out of the South for 3 days then the Northern areas of the lake would be a good place to start looking for fish, IMHO. Wind blown coves can act like bait traps and sometimes the fish will hang in there as well. There's a really great thread on here that Tiny posted years back that offers a ton of information about the seasonal migration of blue cats. I think the name of the post is " catching blues no matter the name of the lake" or something to that effect. This time of year it is important to consider the thermacline and lack of or lesser oxygen in deeper waters. Not to say there aren't fish moving through the deep stuff and along the flats and edges of deep water but IMHO alot of the fish move to waters probably 20ft and less varying from lake to lake. As the water cools down the thermacline will disolve and opens the lake up for Fall,Winter and Spring. Very cool thread here! Locating bluecat no matter what the lake's name is.
