Well done! I love catching gar. In fact, they've made some of my trips to Lake Palestine near Tyler over recent years. There, the one's I've landed have always hit my crankbait.
Way to go on another species!

I'll work on the "how-to" video next week. Thanks for the idea!
Excellent, I'll definitely be looking forward to that one!

I'm thinking of inventing a product called "Ball-Guard", or "Scrotie-Protect", designed for kayak fishermen who deepwater catch and release gar.
The idea just came to me.
PS: Great Post ! ! ! I'd buy it!!

I can't vouch for the validity of this statement, but I had an old guy tell me years ago to cut a bunch of 2" sections of rope, fray both ends quite a bit, soak em in some really nasty scent and tie one on the end of your line like a lure in the middle of the section. Gar hits it, gets snagged in his teeth and he can't shake it. Catch, cut your line, tie on another section of rope and go again. Can't say it really works, but I thought it made sense.

It definitely works. But I wouldn't want to do it that way because it's impossible to get it out of their teeth from the kayak, and if you cut your line now they can't get their mouth open and they'll starve. Here's a video of it working. He frayed a shoelance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S80PvBnCfIEI don't think you even need to spray it with a scent. I went to Lewisville last night and got footage of gar rolling EVERYWHERE but couldn't get them to hit anything. Might give it another shot on Saturday. One gar from one angle won't make a very compelling video... I need a 2nd!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Bobby. Nice fish, really like the last pic you've posted. Always a surprise when you hook one over 4' while yakfishing and they jump a rod length from you.
