So I left work early to try to get into some smallies at Eisenhower Park on Texoma. Windfinder told me to expect 5mph winds around noon. Well, either something drastically changed or Windfinder sucks, because when I got out of that cove the wind was whipping at 20mph and the waves were HUGE.

Well, you know me, I paddled out anyways. I got to my spot and I mean I couldn't even pitch the jig I was trying to use. Wasn't happening. I decided to call it a day and just go home and work on my next video.

Well, I gotta paddle anyways, why not troll a crankbait? As I get back to the boat docks at Eisenhower, I crossed the breakwater tires and all of a sudden my rod bends over HARD and line is screaming off the reel. I thought I was hung up because my drag was set way too tight for line to be coming off like that. I grabbed the rod and immediately knew it was a fish. And it was a FISH. I thought I had a MONSTER striper on the line, I couldn't get this thing to the surface on 8 lb test. I kept thinking it was going to break me off.

Finally it surfaced, and it was something I have been chasing for about two months now... my first decent gar from the kayak!

Gorgeous longnose (I think?) gar, I believe around 4 1/2 feet. Then came the challenge of figuring out how to get this damn thing in the boat. They're so slippery. I tried grabbing it around the mouth with gloves and almost ended up with two trebles in my hand.

Finally I grabbed it behind the gills and just chunked it up onto my pedal drive. SUCCESS!

WHAT A BATTLE! It made the whole trip worth it. I know a lot of you are thinking "what, that trash fish?" but man, these things are a blast to catch and I've been wanting to catch one for a long time.

Thanks for reading!

Robert

Congrats on a nice angling feat!

You might want to start a log of each specie of fish you catch, I have a feeling you'll be at it for a long time.

A good rule of angling philosophy is not to interfere with another fisherman's ways of being happy, unless you want to be hated.

nice long nose. It's not easy getting one of those in the boat.

I'm thinking of inventing a product called "Ball-Guard", or "Scrotie-Protect", designed for kayak fishermen who deepwater catch and release gar.

The idea just came to me.

PS: Great Post ! ! !

The ONLY reason to fish with a fly rod in Texas
is to throw a POPPER, casting any other type fly just means you're doing something.

That last pic looks great! I fished LL Saturday morning and was supposed to be calm winds, winds were over 20 mph and waves crashing over the yak. Needless to say it was a short paddle.
