Looking for recommendations for shore fishing at Lake Sommerville... Looking for a what, where and how as I'm new to Texas freshwater fishing. FYI: About 100 Boy Scouts will be descending upon the park in two weeks.
Thanks so much.....

Nails Creek doesn't have much water and it is getting stagnate but the Yegua is running clear and pretty. It is tough fishing either creek but the scouts might like to paddle / hike to Newmans Bottom. I can arrange for a paddle tour up the Yegua with a group of scouts and have another group of scouts hike to Newmans to exchange with the paddlers. It's a six mile hike and a six mile paddle, 12 miles round trip. Allow 6 to 8 hours for the whole trip, complete the journey and you can count yourself among the "Yegua Tough Guys".
As an alternative to the 12 mile trip we could paddle up Nails Creek to the trailway bridge a 3 mile paddle and about the same distance trail hike for a 6 mile round trip. Allow 4-6 hours for this trip.

Jared, I'm up for another weekday trip some time soon.. might drag the yak down from Newmans @ the low water crossing like we did in December instead of paddling up from the lake...

Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to get away during the week any time soon. I don't think even on weekends there will be very many people down at Newmans since there is no White Bass run, so I may try it then.

Finally it rained. Anyone had been there in Yegua creek? Is water high enough for whitebass to run?

The Yegua watershed got between 1 to 3 inches so there should be some runoff but was it enough? I really don't think it was but more rain will certainly make for more runoff as the ground saturates. I checked http://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/reports/fish.htm Tuesday evening and Lake Somerville was at 236.14 and as of 9:50PM Wednesday it was at 236.20 so we are headed in the right direction It takes two days for the water way up the Yegua to reach the lake so there is a delay to compensate for. Even a six inch rise in the lake could be enough to put lots of whitebass up the Yegua but more rain is better!

Likely the water all absorbed into the dry ground. We just need more rain. Then where to fish this weekend? Will Birch Creek be productive?

Just spent Sunday afternoon @ Somerville up the Yegua and caught fish... lots of fish.. it ain't over yet! As a matter of fact if I had fished more and paddled less I could have easily limited out on whitebass and maybe a few crappie too but I had other things on the agenda to search for in the creek Sometimes you have to go alone...

Went back to the Yegua Monday late afternoon and talked to two guys that had caught 45 whitebass up near the trailway bridge. I didn't do so well with the fly rod but that didn't surprise me in the least. I did catch fish but no whitebass!
