We new to catfishing from the boat, went yesterday and now got some questions. Do one drop the line straight down beside the boat or do you cast the line away from the boat. Casting away from the boat is hard to detect a bite because of boat sway, line is slack most of the time. Straight down may work in deep water but i do not see it work like that in shallow water. How do i fish for cats from the boat?

Welcome to catfishing--
To me just fish the way you are comfortable doing it--bait in the water is most important.
Here is a very good thread addressing the sway in a boat.

What has happed to you does not define who you are-

HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!

Put two anchors out to reduce sway. Use one anchor and a portable tree in shallow water.

you can put the line out and drift slow dragging the bait behind the boat if there is not a lot of wind and the boat moves slow you can fish the whole lake

We also used a bobber to keep the bait just of the bottom away from the boat with no results. Will drift the bait behind next time Was just a skunk day for us but i did not see any fish at the cleaning tables either. Maybe next time.
