Buddy of mine has a Ranger Z119. With a 225 merc he gets an honest GPS 71MPH with an 8" jackplate and 25p prop. Thats with two persons, medium load of gear, 1/2 tanks of fuel and a 24v trolling motor(3 batteries total onboard). His is set up to still give him a decent hole shot and will stay up at lower planing speeds(rough water travel). Due to circumstances beyond my control(someone took out my old Ranger on the highway) I am shopping for a slightly used Ranger. Really like the storage of the 520 and 521 over his 519. My question for actual Ranger owners is what REAL speeds are you getting from your 520's and 521's with a 250 on the back? Not really a speed demon but still want a new boat to run at least 70. Thanks for the honest input. 361V

What? It's a known fact you catch more fish when you're going over 70mph in your boat.

Not as fast as my Alpha 211. Sorry, couldn't help myself, but in all honesty a few MPH's doesn't catch more. I used to own an old 373 V with a 200 HP Johnson GT (over the rated HP for boat) that would run in the low 70's. Some drunk ran me off the Hwy and I rolled it and a Suburban. Talk about a bad day!

I have an '06 z21 w/ Yamaha 250 Hpdi and recently saw 69mph on GPS. That was with full tank of gas and all my gear. Could get In the 70's if I unloaded all the [censored] that I think I need.

I have a slow 521 that has gps 72.2 with one and bumped 70 (wind aided)with two..with a 225 HO.

Now days it is about speed cause if you dont beat the other guy there he will be there on your spot catching the same fish you were on.

I have a 17 ft Express with a 80 Yammie. It makes 48 MPH but I seldom travel that fast. It makes my 72 year old jaws flap aganist my ears and sometimes when it's really lumpie my uppers come loose. I nearly swallowed them once. 70 MPH I would lose it all. I do like being able to make three trips on 5 gal of gas through.

Very impressed but i aint never seen it on the water., My ZX250 with 250vMax--only gets 69-71mph consistantly, how the hell are yall running 70-74loaded. I have fished many tournys and have never been passed or caught by a ranger...a partner of mine has a Z21 and he has never hit 70mph----ever.

I'm with Old Coot. 40 horse, 35mph, tank of gas lasts a year. Only put $10 in every few months--otherwise it goes bad before I can use it.

I have a 2004 zx225 with a 225ox 66. It will run 68 tourney load and with just me it will do 74. I haven't been passed by many rangers. In fact I past a Z21 today on falcon in bug rollers. He wasn't doing to well. Lol

Who cares? I would be asking about trolling motors. It doesn't matter what boat or motor if someone doesnt know how to drive it in the first place.

Thanks for the responses from real Ranger owners. I statred this to gather real info. Yes, I am aware of the limitations of Ranger in the speed catagory; I have owned one longer then most of yall. To those who are concerned for my well being and desire for "moderate speed" thanks for your concern but my mother and father are still around. Mostly though, to those who keep responding to keep my old Ranger: Read the original post. Not an option, thus the "Ranger taken out by a driver on the highway" story. My old Ranger was immaculate. Ask "Blue Ranger" on here. He saw it shortly before it's demise. You are rubbing salt in a wound telling me to keep it. Ya, I knew this post would fly awhile and attract all kinds other then what the question asked for! smirk wink

I'm about like Rangerb, I think my boat will do about 40 mph. 1986 pro craft with a merc 115. When I'm doing 40 I still have a little throttle left. If I goose it, it doesn't go faster, it just makes more noise. I do have gps, so I guess I could check my speed. O well, I'm not in that big a hurry anyway.

How fast is your Ranger should be answered "fast enough". It's like when someone ask how my Allison fishes, I answer "good enough". Every good fishing boat seems to be a compromise on the speed end of the equation. Every fast boat seems to be a compromise on the fishing end of the equation. I have had most of the go fast boats and they all are compromises. Decide what is important to you and buy that boat. You should be happy with that compromise.

Its the SHO that make the difference. I had a 06 z521 with 250 HPDI and tournament loaded it would run 70. I got a 2011 Z521 with the SHO and with same load it will run 74.

Go ahead and talk all the smack you want while its in the shop. Cause thats the only way that ranger is gonna out-run me. Some of these rangers must be using the same gps as the 84mph triton has on it. LOL!!!!

I would believe this. My SHO is faster than my old HPDI but is still not as fast ON TOPEND as the Merc 250 ProXS. The Merc is 1-2 mph faster on the big end but the SHO will put 5 boat lengths on the Merc in a 1/2 mile race from a dead stop. It takes my buddy with the Merc over a mile to catch me but he will run me down if we are loaded the same.

How many fish have you caught at 70+ mph. Between a boat that runs 60 and a boat that runs 70 most people only see about 10 minutes more of fishing in a day at most. Not gonna make much of a difference.

If you fun fish, then speed is not important. I and many on this forum has pulled up to a spot and boated 20+ lbs in the first ten minutes of a tournament. ...thants money ol'boy!!! I guarantee I/we weren't the only ones that knew the fish were there, as my partner nets another 7 lber....boats slow down and wish they were 10 minutes earlier...

Ya know, callin a man a liar is risky business. But for all the naysayers that seemed to be in the passenger seat that I didn't see... Empty livewell, 1/2 fuel, 17 rods, all the other 'stuff' and my 220 it runs 74.5 in January. Occasionally a little better. Yes, I have a shelf full of props, and the 25f is the 'fastest'. The 25t I like best, and it will not turn up the 26f. The hole shot is not near what the SHO's are, but the big end is slightly better with Merc's. Full livewells, full fuel, and 2 ppl, it's 71 or so. add hot weather, and 70 is more common. I have done this a long time and know how to drive to the max, but no, it ain't the fastest Ranger around, I rode in one of the old 519's with a 225 EFI that was much stronger, and if you look at BBC you'll see several that are running better than mine. Don't really matter to me, like I said never been bit at that speed, and my favorite speed is 5

I am not sure that using proper English you can put fast and ranger in the same sentence. Maybe in Spanish or Chinese but not English.

I had a 65+ mph boat that I sold rececently and 90% of the time it was too windy to run it that fast.

I've owned three Rangers thru the years and none of them were what I would call "fast" but fast is a relative term. I thought my Bullet with the Merc 300 Promax was fast until I bought my Allison with the Drag SS Merc.

Fact is that most all the cookie cutter boats (Skeeter, Cat, Ranger, Triton, etc) now will run 70-75 lightly loaded with a 250. My new Legend 211 with a Yam SHO 250 runs 74 with me solo. Some of you might think that's fast and it is compared to my bud's Express with his Yam 90.

Compared to my old Allison at 117, Uh... No.

My Z520 is not the fastest boat but it breaks 70mph just fine with 2 guys and a normal load. That being said I sure like the way it fishes and that is my #1 priority. I figure as long as I like it the hell with what anyone else thinks. Its paid for and it starts every time I hit the button.
I owned a Bullet and it was a great boat too.
Past that I doubt I need to get fitted for a new jock strap anytime soon so I am happy with what I have.

If you are going to the same spot it makes a difference. And if it is a long run it makes a big difference.

Lots of macho go fast guys here. "My dad will beat up your dad"

Most guys I have seen that are top end freaks that run around going fast all day normally have very little at weigh in.

Mine has hit 65 with a light load and my heavy load. Not bad for a ten year old boat imo.

I have a 06 Z-21 with a 250 Yammy,it does a honest 85-90 MPH by the speedometer. This is with a full load of fuel, full live wells and two people!

How ever, the dam GPS only reads 65 MPH, must be limited to that by Lowarance.

Probably right to a certain extent, but I do not know one guy that has a 65mph boat that doesn't wish it would go 75mph. Speed is fun, so is fishing. In the end, it's all just a hobby anyway.

What worrys me with all this need for speed is the fact its going to bring about a lot more state regulations on the water.Another way to tax in the name of public saftey.DPS with radar guns on the water and speed limits.Tax on horsepower.Go back and read some of the past post on how crazy some were running boat lanes at McDonalds, this goes on way to much everywhere nowdays and bad boat accidents are happening at alltime numbers.I remember when BASS had a 150hp max.to equal the field.Outboard sponsors would have a heart attack if all slowed down a bit.Pre daylight aint no time for 70mph running by GPS.

A lot of Ranger boats will surpass the 60 MPH zone, of course they are still on the trailer being pulled down the highway.

and they are really a "dry ride" while on the trailer.

Yall a bunch of haters, Haha, love my ranger, had a 518 with a 200 yammy, that would easily bust 75, had good top end, just sucked on the hole shot, got a 520 now its got a awesome hole shot, just only runs 63 with a 225 merc, but it will take that rough water

You'd have to have ambulances standing by, too many accidents waiting to happen there. There are always a few morons fishing the tournament that would start a pileup.

I get my Comanche 519 back in a couple of days with my Saltwater 280 / Jack Plate / A6 box off of one of our drag boats. Care to lay a wager?

You guys with no Ranger experience need to read the original post. He wants input from Ranger owners.

My Ranger is the best fishing boat I've owned. Not the fastest, but as someone said above, that's what the Allison is for.

Good luck with your purchase. Your speed is all in how you set the boat up.

From a former Ranger owner, yes they have built some slow boats over the years but they built the 340-V in the 80's and it was probably one of the most insane bass rides ever created. I owned one, it was like driving a fuel altered on the drag strip, you just pointed it the direction you wanted to go and hoped for the best at full throttle. I pulled 72 mph out of it with an XR4 150, with a 25 pitch 4 blade Predetor prop on the back and when I let out of it it was still pulling strong like it had a lot more to give. I had to let up because it just got to crazy. It didn't have a jackplate but I think a 6 inch unit would have tamed it a lot. If you live like I did back then and half the fun was just getting there the 340 was your huckleberry. I owned this boat back in the days when I was 20 something, single, 10 feet tall, and bullet proof......Would I get behind the wheel of one of these again? If I didn't have a wife and kids, maybe but age has taken away the dare devil I used to be.......my two cents

When I want to go fast I switch to my 08 xrd bullet with 300xs. lol

Best of both worlds right there!

That's usually where the fast drivers end up.

I have had three Rangers and my current boat is a 2006 521 DVX with a 250 Yamaha and stock prop. On a good day with half fuel and normal load, the GPS top speed is 69 mph. Plenty fast for me. I normally don't run any faster than 55 - 60. Didn't buy any of the Rangers for top end speed, bought them for dependability and safety.
Nothing against anyone who wants and runs a fast boat, and as congested as the lakes are today, I just prefer to be on the safer side. Just my 2 cents ...

Someone deploy the power pole! I think we are in a good spot! The heck with it. I think this will do. I hope everyone was ok when that happened.

+1 something you really have to consider these days.....especially around metro lakes....based on the traffic I see around here, based on the number of boats I see. I think bass boat traffic has actually declined somewhat because of fuel cost, but the pleasure boater traffic/jet skiers has actually increased.

Lying about speed is a "guy thing". Always expected. Never understand why I have to explain myself for enjoying going fast though. Yep, it is all fun: fishing, going fast...

I know the feeling. I was almost forced on top of a family in a small tri hull bass boat by someone in a ski boat that wasn't paying attention to what they were doing. I was lucky and cleared the tri hull and the bank by about 10 yards each. The guy in the tri hull ran me down a gave me what for, but he really should have gone after the guy in the ski boat. If he would have been paying attention to what was going on I wouldn't have had to take that manuever, it was either do what I did or hit the ski boat head on. I just sucked it up and went on.....

I've owned 3 Rangers and none were fast for the power on the transom but they were not "lead sled" like so many people make them out to be.

My Allison with a 150 will go faster with less fuel than my 518 with a 200 but when you let off the gas and start fishing the Ranger was much more stable to fish out of.

I have a Triton 21 HP with a 250xs, yesterday on Amistad I hit 73.4, full tank of gas, live wells full and a full tourney load, two people, sure did not know that a Ranger would do that.

My new Z521 with 250 Pro XS, duel poles, livewells full, gas full, loaded with my partner and I hit 71.1 MPH this weekend. This boat is fun to drive! My last Ranger was a 521 VX, smooth stable, not a hint of chine walk. This boat trimmed up and aired out can be hand full at times, which I really like! 3/4 Trim and raise the jackplate a little is where it is the fastest. If you haven't driven a new Z boat, do it before you buy!

My Ranger is a 1983- 330v with 115 evinrude, It has NEVER had any major motor work " starter=plugs=water pumps" . garage kept. no jack up plates or any that "hot rod" stuff. Still ha the built in Flasher in the dash.
2 people, 15 gallons fuel, 3 batteries, 6 bottles water, 4 cans sardines, 1 onion, 1 lb rat cheese, 2 sleeves crackers, 1 roll toilet paper, and minner bucket GPS 43 mph and my ears start flapping. AND its PAID for, thats the best part owned it since we picked it up in Flippin Arkansas. December 83.

This ^ I just know going 75-80 mph helps you catch more fish...LMAO

Probably right to a certain extent, but I do not know one guy that has a 65mph boat that doesn't wish it would go 75mph. Speed is fun, so is fishing. In the end, it's all just a hobby anyway.

True, so true....

Bass fishermen by nature are competitive. Nothing wrong with that!

Some people do not realize that the Z520 and Z521 platforms are damn good in the performance area. Some just repeat what they have heard and think it applies to all Ranger models. Without question a lot of Ranger models are not the fastest on the water by any means but a couple of them as I listed above can and will break 70mph easily with a load.
Its just like people commenting that Rangers are heavy and I can tell you that while researching the brand against Skeeter which I love and owned at the time I was stunned to see the Iclass actually weigh more than the same size range Ranger across the board. Also some of their other models are lighter as well. I am sure if one spent the time to gather weights of all the brans I would think you would be suprised. Instead people just ususally repeat what they have heard and often it is not firsthand knowledge.

Is this thread really still going? Look my opinion Ranger is the best all around boat for many reasons. So when do you really care about top speed? The takeoff at the begining of the tournament? Ok I understand a little bit. I still have to go back to what trolling motor is on the front of the boat. This is my main concern. I can't catch a fish at 35mph or 75mph. Again I have to say who cares. If speed is your main concern. Why don't you give up bass fishing and take up drag racing.

Evidently my tournament loads are different than 99% of guys. Between needing to personally lose about 50lbs, two batteries, stripping the electronics and trolling motor, I might be able to gain the 10-15 mph to keep up with all these Rangers.

I love to read the responses when someone posts a question like this. woot

The bottom line is that it doesn't really matter a hill of beans how fast your boat runs unless you are trying to set some sort of speed record. Rangers have never been known for being fast but the new Z500 series boats are changing a few folks minds. The new Z500 series is as good a fishing boat and as fast a hull as they have ever built. cheers

It is the first Ranger in a long time that I have driven that will actually lift the nose and run "clean" without having to overtrim the motor. I have been in James Caldemeyer's new Z520 with a Merc 250 ProXS and it will literally fly with two of us and a heavy load. cool

The term "literally fly" has different meanings to different people. Having owned a few (like 7) Bullets and a couple Allisons my definition of flying may be a little different than someone else. For a premium tournament bass rig loaded with all the stuff a guide carries in his rig and two people, 72 is literally flying.

A few years back at Lake Lavon I was out testing some props in my new Bullet/Merc 300 rig and thought I was setting the water on fire at 103 on gps. A Talon comes running by me with twin 300 Mercs like I am tied to a stump! I thought that was literally flying until we saw Gordon Mineo in his 32' Eliminator with Twin 2,000 hp gas turbines come around the point at 180 mph. OMG

At the end of the day we all share the same passion for bass fishing and all the other stuff like fast boats and fast cars is just icing on the cake. food

Ask Sinkey how fast my old Bullet ran.... thumb

Didn't say "couldn't". Just said "wow" as in 180 mph at Lake Lavon would be a butt puckering ride... grin

Whatever you do don't sell that boat. You have the fastest Ranger ever produced.

Nope he don't, guy I know running a 520 with 250 SHO worked prop and one power pole is getting 74 tourny loaded and 76 by himself. He is about 5'11" 180 maybe?

Double Nope! 78.4 on GPS is the fastest my Ranger has gone!

OMG

At the end of the day we all share the same passion for bass fishing and all the other stuff like fast boats and fast cars is just icing on the cake. food

Ask Sinkey how fast my old Bullet ran.... thumb

I remember going out with you in that bullet on hot summmer day and you hitting 101. You are about the only person I trust to drive WOT on those boats Ken.

I've been damn near thrown out of a gambler around 80mph and had a prop blow out with another guy on the forum here at over 90mph that got me airborn and on the back deck holding on to the rear ped seat seeing my life flash before my eyes.

I was a little sad when I saw you got away from fat boats frown

Didn't say "couldn't". Just said "wow" as in 180 mph at Lake Lavon would be a butt puckering ride... grin

any ride with Mr Addington is a "puckering" ride , lol...

I go back & forth between Corvettes & Cadillacs..... The Bullets & Allys don't offer all the creature comforts of the boats like Legend & Ranger. It is apples & oranges in comparison. People ask me if I like the Legend or the Bullet better.. My answer is always, Yes... I like both. They are two totally different animals.

When the wind is blowing 25 from the south I REALLY LIKE MY LEGEND! When it is calm outside and I have an itch to go fast I miss my Bullets.

My old Bullet that Shane is now running with the 300XS will run 90 LOADED TO FISH. The downsides are the boat isn't as stable at rest as a heavier boat. The wind blows you around a bit while on the troll motor and it doesn't ride nearly as well as the Legend but the Legend is 20 mph slower loaded to fish. LOL

I am truly blessed that I have had the opportunity to own and fish out of as many different boats as I have. I really do like most all boats but there is no perfect boat. They all have shortcomings.

Lots of FAST boats around here I see... All I know is at 72-73 I walked away from 11 boats on the way down to the dam this weekend. So be that as it may all these 75+ boats are making me laugh. I had 3 guys ask me if I had a hydrotech kit this weekend. Im to damn cheap for that but at least I won the boat race lol.

Hell its been over a year since I cashed anything else so I gotta win somethin lol

Just my observation, but there seems to be quite a few 70-75mph boats out there. Most of the name brand boats can be rigged to get into that range. About 78 is where it seems to get a little sketchy. A few can do it, but not that many. Then, getting to 80 and above, I think you eliminate most all the name brand fishing boats and step into the realm of the small production, specialty bass boats built for speed and fishing. Compromises for sure.

Just know when you buy a boat that will top out at 40, you will want to go 50. Same as when you buy a boat that will go 85, you will want to go 90. It's just the cost of being a guy.

Speed cost money, especially when you are trying to make a tugboat into a raceboat. But it can be fun trying.

Put my new z522 with 250 in the water today....after breaking it in for the first two hours, I let it eat. 70.8 mph and just shy of 6k rpm's.

i agree with that statment 100%
the ole 361V is one of the best ranger ever made!!

The best! The 361, then the 391, were the best boats Ranger ever produced. The Z520/Z521 aren't far behind in 2nd.

Ran a 481 and liked the 361 a LOT better. IMO. A 451V with a para lift was fun.

The best one was the 461VS IMO but they put that on the market shortly before they went from 150 to 250 max on BASS events and it never got a good following.

Might be, but 74 for a Ranger would definitely be a record.
