They have taken over squaw creek. Supposedly someone released them in there. They messed up the bass fishing pretty good. I doubt they messed the bass fishng at all. If anything they improved the overall size. Take a look at the lakes which have them and they all have great bass fishing : Amistad, Falcon, Fayette, Choke Canyon............

They are introduced by legal means to eat vegetation. Not everything is invasive and tearing up the fishery. Permits are granted to stock certain species to accomplish a task. They are good eating, too. Don't be upset. I bet it was fun to catch. It appears to be an albino.
Trying to catch anything that swims.

Very good eating IMHO. oh, and yes, it looks like a tilapia to me too.

Looks like a tilapia, caught many at Fairfield in the cast cast net. I have seen em caught on spinners, rattlettrap, worms, crickets, and various other bait. When anything goes into or near the nest, tilapia go into attack mode. I've been told they spawn when the water gets to 70 and continue until it gets below 70.

Seems like I heard tilapia were vegetarians, did he strike to protect his nest, or are they omnivores ?

They're omnivorous. I need some in spring for my Aquaponics system. They grow fast and have a lot of babies.
Look up " Aquaponics! The self sustained revolution." on Face Book and like the page to learn how to use fish to grow anything at 4 times the rate with 90% less water than normal agriculture while eliminating all chemicals and producing fertilizer for in ground plants.

Absolutely a tilapia, likely a variety known as "White Nilotica." White and pink tilapia being very common and fetching a bigger price than wild types at the market. Although there are many species of tilapia, all of which have varying degrees of tolerance to things like temperature and salinity, there has been no evidence to suggest that any of them are "adapting to cold water." Aquaponics is an up and coming thing, tilapia makes an excellent species for such systems in some cases, but there are others that do as well or better. Anybody wanting to learn a great deal more about aquaponics, how it works, its potential for backyard as well as commercial production, etc. needs to come to the Texas Aquaculture Association Annual Conference.
