For years I used Lowrance. Now I use Humminbird.

Either. Both are good and will help you catch fish.

"..The pleasantist angling is to see the fish
Cut with her golden oars the silver stream,
And greedily devour the treacherous bait.

both units will give you great pitctures, but having played with both I will stick with Humminbird mainly because they are way more user friendly. I just can't stand the way you have to navigate through the pages on a Lowrance versus the Humminbird.

I like the sonar way better on the Lowrance.
I like the ease of use on the Humminbird.
Lowrance used to have good customer service.
I don't like the way Lowrance drops support or repairs so quickly on their units, although they do give a good discount on new product when the old ones fail, but sometimes they fail too soon.
I like the quick disconnect system on the Humminbird.

I have a Lowrance LCX 38c up front, a Lowrance LCX 27c on the console and a Hummnbird 798 above the steering wheel. I run the humminbird in the SI mode only.

Humminbirds are my choice. I love my old Lowrance the Tulsa USA made ones, reliable no problems.
Lowrance NAVCO moved their production to Mexico and the quality went to heck,
The first gen HDS had major case leakage problems.
They had to take back and replace their products so they refurbished and resold them.
After reeding this post I am glad they have fixed their custom or service problems.
A forum member lost his unit in lake fork. Please read this post
Humminbirds are totally water proof!
The other main advantage is you unplug your unit and put in the truck and not leave the $500 HDS lss1 module behind in the boat.

One you build and fish with your own hand built custom rod you will fish with nothing else!

I've had 3 units from Lowrance; LCX 17, LCX 25c, and now HDS 8 gen2. I had to replace the LCX 17 many years ago and they sent me a brand new unit.

As far as the software, the HDS is much improved and has quick key settings that make it very easy to set up. Plus with structurescan you can overlay onto the Navionics map. Never owed HB, but assume its a Chevy Ford type argument. Bassboatcentral.com has entire threads dedicated to both units with pictures and discussions.
