get someone to show you how to properly clean fish would be the first thing I would suggest. This is my suggestion also. If the fish is going to die then I would prefer to be the one who benefits from it. All of this is depending on the fish being legal. BigDozer66

Man you guys are cracking me up. I gut hooked the fish really bad. Way worse than in that video. His throat looked like a bleeding strawberry. It was weird. It looked painful. And there was tons of blood. The hook was blocking the passage into his stomach and it was stuck in there very good. I tried really hard to save him. I did put him back in water and pulled him around a bunch to get water to flow over his gills. In the end the hook was so deep and it looked terrible so I put him out of his misery. I know there is no chance for survival if I choose to kill the fish, but I made the judgement call that I should put him down. I would feel bad tossing him back and have him suffer and die out. In the end I think I did the right thing but next time depending on how bad the damage is, I will release the fish back. The thing that bums me is that is now one less fish out there for everyone else to enjoy catching. majority of the time when they are bleeding that bad, the point of the hook will be showing in the gills somewhere...several times i have had a fish that i thought had swallowed hook too bad, just to find a small piece still in gills, then you can carefully reverse it through the gills once u find it

Try a squeeze hook remover. They work pretty well and provide a degree of leverage that needle nose dont. They would fit through the gills better as well i would think. Thanks for posting that trick. I had that happen to me last weekend.

Next time turn the video camera on before you take a rock to its head and post it up. Put some old school gangsta rap on for the background music too.

cut the line and put it back. last time i went fishing i caught to 2 fish, both with red wacky hooks in em, one was so rusty i was able to snip the hook out of it. i aways save my ice bag for drinks to put fish in that don't make it, and put em on ice, so your cooler want smell to fishy.

if its truly gut hooked like you say, the out through the gills trick wont work. at that point cut the line and hold it in the water and move it back and forth and get water running through its gills. it will pass that hook if its alive believe it or not. if it wont swim away, or floats up on its side.. filet it and eat it.

Yeah the hook was way down in the gut. It swallowed half the hook. I didn't feel the strike because it was right before the storm was coming in and the wind was really bad. Also I didn't beat the fishes brains out. I laid him down, grabbed a rock under my foot, wacked him hard on the head and hit him a few more times just to make sure. Haha. I think you guys have the mental picture of some savage beating the living [censored] out of a fish with blood flying on their face. Totally not the case. It is hilarious though. But if you are 99% sure a fish is going to die, and you were not planning on taking a fish home, do you kill it or let it go? I didn't have ice to throw him on and the poor dude looked bad so I just put him down. Lol. No guts were spilled. You would be surprised how tough of heads they have! Anyways live and learn. Thanks for the tips and tricks guys. Thanks for the laughs. I probably looked like a rookie but what the hell, I am a rookie. I'm just glad we can all get a good laugh out of it! Hahaha.
