1) If it is windy just drag it and pause fairly quickly. Fish are likely more active and you don't need to do much else to entice a strike.
2) If it's calm and hot then slow it down and hop it with longer pauses. You can double or even triple hop it and let it rest to see what which gets the best response.
3) My fav set up is a Picasso jig with a Space Monkey trailer. Regardless, I want the trailer to have a lot of movement, especially when not moving the bait.
You can really feel the bottom contour. Don't be afraid to throw a 1/2oz or even 3/4oz. Oh, and when you can't feel the bottom (bait is kinda weightless) set the hook hard. More likely than not a fish picked it up and you didn't feel it.
Good fishing!

A jig is a great tool for catching bass from thick cover and is pretty simple to fish. In shallow water use flipping jigs in 1/4 to 1/2 oz sizes. Flip and cast these jigs around cover such as laydowns, standing timber, and boat docks in 1-10 ft. As a general rule, the dirtier the water color, the closer bass will hang to cover so in muddy to stained water flipping a jig tight to cover can catch some nice bass. Most of your bites will occur on the fall or right after your jig hits bottom next to its target. In deeper water cast football head jigs from 1/2 to 3/4 oz on structure such as main lake points, creek bends, and humps. I like 15-25ft depths for my deep water football jig fishing. Slowly drag and hop the jig back to the boat. The key to working these football jigs right is to try and feel the lake bottom the entire way back to the boat. Whenever you feel your jig bump into a stump, rock, or brush make sure and lift and drop the jig a few times before continuing your retrieve. Most of the time in deeper water this is when you will get your bites. You can also shake the lure in place to coax a strike from the bass that is using that cover. Make sure to use a stout 7'-7'6" medium heavy to heavy rod with great sensitivity for jig fishing. Your rod will help you to not only feel the isolated cover that bass relate to but will also help you to have a strong hookset and the leverage to pull bass out of heavy cover. Usually the bite will feel like a light thump or tick when a bass eats your jig, when you feel this set the hook quickly. Always be ready when fishing a jig, the bites will be light and bass will not hang on to the lure very long. Use 15-20 line depending on what type of cover you are fishing. Here at Lake Fork, I use 20lb fluorocarbon line for most all of my jig fishing. Color selection can be kept pretty basic as black and blue or any shade of green and brown seem to work well under most conditions. I hope this helps, good luck fishing. Thanks for your wisdom!

They do tend to get hung up more. When I started I lost alot em til I learned how to feel everything.I still get hung up but i dont lose them cause I don't set the hook in trees.I love em and it's about all I use. It's what I want to catch em on anyway. If you don't anything set the freaking hook and don't wonder why you can't feel it.

I've caught a few fish on them but not enough to build confidence. Jigs, c-rigs and swimbaits. Never done any good with either but they obviously work...

I am at the point in my life where the jig in some type of variation is the only bait Im even throwing anymore. Just remember the jig is important but its also a platform for some really cool soft plastic trailers. I hated a jig and was intimidated by them until I learned to use them. I had to leave everything at home and carry only the jigs a couple of trips out to get the hang of it. Uncle Josh pork with a blk/brwn bucktail jig back then. Yall think they will ever come back lol.

Like Brandon said, it is like a Tx. rig so pretend you are fishing that. I pitch most of the time and use jigs that have a "stand up" type head because when the jig hits bottom the hook is pointed up. I do not want the jig to fall over and some jig head designs will let that happen. I like jigs that have a round bend large hook. Im not a fan of the wide gap hooks on a jig because I always thread my trailer on the hook and the round bend hooks work better for that. I use Santone, Viper XP, and Revenge jigs. The weed guard is the perfect length on these jigs so all I do is fan it out just slightly. I also trim the skirt of the jig just barely past the bend in the hook. Football head jigs are good in open water areas, or places that you would throw a c-rig and for the most part, I fish it like a C-rig. Drag and pause. I probably pause the jig longer than the C-rig. You also have jigs designed for swimming and for fishing grass. Those work well also.
Black/blue/purple Various shades of green with accents of either chartruce, purple, and orange work well Black/brown/amber Peanut butter n Jelly Those are some good basic colors to start with.
Always add a trailer to your jig. I like Zoom ultra speed vibe craws--both sizes, Grande Bass Mega claws, Xcite Raptor craw, Netbait baby paca craw.and Zoom or Yum chunks. You can match your trailer to the jig or have it accent the jig or be totally different. Your choices are endless. Example Black blue jig/black blue glitter trailer--matching the trailer to the jig. Peanut butter n Jelly jig/ green pumpkin/purple glitter trailer--the purple glitter in the trailer accents the purple in the jig skirt. Here's another one- black blue jig--blue saphire trailer. Balck/blue jig-green pumpkin trailer--complete contrast.
