Nice fish....let me ask....what size line? We're y'all stroking em or draggin bottom? Caldemeyer knows how to get it done.

Thanks guys, I picked up some Santones at APT, they didn't stock the Talon's. Will try them out Wed, do you just crawl them, stay in contact with the bottom? Or hop them? Or just figure out what they want??

Just have to figure out what they want. I normally start out just dragging them like a carolina rig then I'll hop it or stroke it if they want it faster.

Good choice. thumb
Let the fish tell you what they want. Somedays you can't drag it slow enough, other days they want a fast paced drag or stroke/hop. Just like anything, you've gotta lock it in your hand and learn from each bite. You've got the right jig, get some 20# invis-x and a heavy action rod you'll be ready to go.

This is a link to a thread I started a while back featuring a Pete Ponds video about lighter wire hooks, why and how. I hope you find it helpful.

I don't think you should have to use 1.5oz lures in order to find a beefy hook. They are more of a finesse jig, IMO. I made a comment on Tacklewarehouse' website.

I'll post a pic after I figure out how to work my POS phone. For what its worth, I've got about 2 dozen of both Talon football and flip jigs in 1/2oz and 3/4oz.

Football JIgs are not suppose to have a heavy wire flipping hook in them. That is not what they are designed for. They are designed for Deep water and 15lb test Fluorocarbon. Set your drag properly and they cant bend the hook. You can't fish them like a flipping jig w/65lb braid with the drag locked down, that wasn't what they were designed for...... Football jigs are more of a finesse technique.

I wouldn't take that finesse technique with football heads mentality to Fork or Falcon, you'll get your heart broke on that 15 lb line smile

Caught plenty of big fish on light wire football jigs, 2 10lbr's are at the top of that list. I don't use light line though, I'm a braid fanatic. I use 20lb floro leaders. But.... like I said in many posts before, I set my drag accordingly.

*Knock on wood* I don't have hook bending problems even when I use those little light wire mustad hooks for flukes. Again, I think most of it has to do with the I gotta set the hook so hard the whole boat shakes and crank em to the boat as fast as I can mentality.

Sometimes I think it helps us bass fisherman to think outside the box a bit. Look at how other fisherman catch different sport fish. Lots of people are not comfortable with line to line knots. But look at offshore fisherman, they've been catching 400lb Marlin and Tuna for decades with line to line connections. Look at Trout fisherman and the light line and tiny hooks they use to catch monster brown trout in the 7 and 8 lb range on dinky 4lb test line. I've caught tons of pond bass with a little trout fly and some of them good size 5lb plus. But today the trend in bass fishing is massive hooks (don't get me wrong I flip heavy wire hooks in the slop and brush to get fish out).

I throw a Santone 1oz & 3/4oz FB jig with a LFT Hyper Freak...this is my favorite jig combo on Fork...these jigs are just built for big fish. Bass Candy, Blk/Blue, & Pinto Beans/Carrots are my favorite colors!!!
