Over the years there's been so many discussions here about football jigs, how to fish them, hook size and hook set. We've always been in the light wire camp and feel that even a big football jig is more useful as a finesse style tool used with lighter line and a light handed hookset. Pete Ponds recently did a video that aired on Wired2Fish that explains why and how he fishes football jigs with light wire hooks. I feel it could be very helpful to anglers who might not have their football jig fishing dialed in completely, and it offers great info for those who are new to the technique. http://www.wired2fish.com/Media1634/When...Wire-Hooks.aspx

Its nice to see that someone understands the value in a light wire hook. The same thing applies when using a C-rig. When you have a heavy C-rig it is much easier to set a wire hook.I have landed many big fish on a #1 wire hook.

There is a place for both light and heavy wire hooks but I think guys would have their eyes opened if they really knew how much stretch line has at that distance and hok much better penetration is with a lighter wire. Even 20 pound flouro is going to stretch a lot. With line in the 14 to 17 pound category which is ideal for deep football jigs a light wire hook improves odds of landing fish.

That's why Matt wanted a lighter wire hook in his new M Series football jig. I still like the heavier hook in the original football jig and have been throwing it a lot the last year or so with no problems. I am gonna start throwing some of the Santone M Series Footballs for a comparison to the originals.
