Do any of you have any tips for fishing from a kayak. I have never been on one and am wondering what to expect.

Once you have been out a few times and reach a certain comfort level, the rest is easy.

Depends greatly on the boat. Just go out without any gear a couple times so you get that comfort level where you aren't thinking you will tip. Just paddle around and have fun. Most of these boats are more stable than you would think. I think of my tarpon 100 as nothing more than a bass boat I can carry. I stand it it, move all around and have not turtled it, at least not intentionally

Here ya go: exasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/5913465/How_to_Choose_the_BEST_Fishing#Post5913465 And remember to not rush out and buy the first one you find. Go demo a few kayaks first. A good deal on a kayak that doesn't fit your needs isn't a good deal. Take your time!! There is going to be a Hobie demo days next Saturday that you will be able to try out just about any Hobie for free. http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbt...PRI#Post7351128Also there is going to be a get together the following weekend at Lake Grapevine. You will be able to try out tons of kayaks and see how other kayakers are setting up theirs. http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbt..._Re#Post7249133

I remember my first kayak, and who doesn't, but I bought mine off of craigs list and didn't have any idea what to look for.
It was one of the older Ocean kayak scramblers.
It was only 28" wide and 12' long and my first experience was it was tippy and I felt like I would tip over, and wondered what did I get myself into?
After a few minutes I realized I wouldn't tip over, and it had what is called secondary stability which catches you when you lean to one side and prevents you from going all the way over.
That is one of the things that you learn from trying many different hull types, and it's kind of a give and take deal.
By that I mean that if stability is your primary concern then a wider kayak is the answer, and usually that means it will be slower.
Narrower and longer means fast but less able to manuever in tight places, but are ideal if you need to cover a lot of water.
Shorter kayaks you can turn on a dime, but they are better for rivers and narrow canals, and tend to be slower and may need a rudder to keep it tracking straight.
most of the kayaks now tend to aim for a happy medium, but there isn't one kayak that will do it all.
Just one more cast!

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm just looking at a cheap one from Academy for the moment. If I find it's something I enjoy i'll probably invest more later. I still have my bass boat so this is something for the creeks. I'm even considering taking out to the bridge pylons on Joe Pool. There won't be any real open water rides for me.

I would get one that fits your price range and has several good qualities and add-ons, especially for fishing. Are you looking into a sit in kayak, or a sit on top?

I'm think I'm going to get a sit in Kayak. My current plan is to bring both my Sit-in and Sit-on-top to the upcoming GTG at Lake Grapevine. I know there will be lots of SOT's there you can try, but you are welcome to take my Pungo for a spin to get a feel of the difference between the two types.
This might be the weirdest, most pointless post ever. I am not against golf, since I cannot but suspect it keeps armies of the unworthy from discovering fishing

I dont like sit-in kayak for texas, to hot! At least a sit-on-top you dont have to worrie about filling up with water.a turtle not a big deal in a SOT.(unless it cold water, but thats a different subject). Also lots of leg postions for comfort.Your legs wont be stuck in a hole. And fishing 1st few times keep it basic , kayak fishing can get busy real quick at times.Ad wind, trees, and stumps with fish-on..........FUN ! Just my two-cents on subject.

I'd recommend a sit on top kayak. It just seems like theres so many more options for fishing.

Paddle one for sure before buying, know plenty of people - dealers that will let you test paddle, they are all differant, and lots of differnt price ranges as well.
