Rule #13 in Murphy's Boat Ramp Law's state's the following.................Any boat loaded onto a trailer, regardless of size of boat and composition of trailer bunks will, at some point in time, succumb to the laws that Newton so eloquently stated all those years ago if there is not an equal or stronger force...(ie the winch)to counter Newton's Law's.

I have seen it happen several times over the years. Everyone needs to do what they are comfortable with, but it is really easy to fasten the eye before you head up the ramp. I know of one of our regulars here that dumped a Ranger in the middle of the ramp, but he will go unnamed.

for me I would rather be safe than sorry. It takes 30 seconds to unhook or hook a boat up but could cost you $$$$$ if you drop it at the ramp... [/quote]
Agreed. I got in a hurry this last weekend loading and hit the wench on the trailer coming in too fast and busted a u bolt on the wench. Lesson learned. I would rather take my time and do it right. Sometimes getting in a hurry slows you down because you can forget to do something. I think as long as you have everything ready on the boat and all you are doing is unloading or loading, take your time and do it right. Doesn't bother me. Just dont be wiping down and loading fishing rods while on the ramp.

I never realized loading and unloading your boat was a competion to see who could do it in the fastest time. I agree that some of the people stop on the ramp to load everything in the boat, that will drive you crazy. I fish about 90% of the time by myself but I have everything ready before I back the trailer down the ramp. It takes me about 3 minutes to unload and about the same to load and I always after loading tie the winch strap down to boat before pulling the boat out of the water. If I'am ever in front of you guys at the boat ramp and Iam taking to long to load or unload I will go ahead and apologize now, or better yet if you see someone loading or unloading by themselves (me) I will gladly accept help in order cut the time in half to load and unload which will save you about 2 mintues. Last night I fished a tourney by myself, I was unloading and a fellow fisherman asked if I wanted him to dump me.....that was greatly appreciated because I did not want to be "That Guy" holding up the ramp. Didn't know the guy but I appreciated the help

I'm gonna hook, un-hook my bow strap every single time at the ramp loading/unloading...period! We're talking maybe an extra 30-45 seconds, right? If you aren't patient enough to deal with it, come back to the lake on Monday and you can have the ramp all to yourself. Now, as to people who load/unload gear, grandma, yak on the cell phone, and wipe the boat down on the ramp, that's a whole different story!

Never pull your boat out of the water without hooking it to the trailer..I don't care who you are, are how good you think you are at loading and unloading, boats will slide backwards. That boat aint goin' anywhere unless you got trailer slicks Tell that to the guy with the Bullet sitting on the concrete halfway up the ramp I saw at Possum Kingdom last year. No slicks, no nothing except carpeted runners. Not the first time, won't be the last. Hook the boat up before you head up the ramp. Cheap insurance. Dude must've done something wrong. I attach the strap when fishing with my tournament partner, because I don't trust him to not back the trailer in too deep, or to not take off too fast pulling up. But when it's me and pops, I never bother. If the boat isn't floating, the bunks aren't frozen, and the driver doesn't goose it, the boat isn't going anywhere That sure is allot of "if"s

Life is to short to get bent out of shape because someone takes 2 extra minutes to load/unload. If they are prepping their boat while sitting in the middle of the ramp it is a different story.

I like to get a snorkel and swim all the way around my boat when it's in the water to check it out. Then I unstrap it and back out. Sorry to hold you up pro.

The only "fishermen" who would get pissed by having to wait an additional 30 seconds to launch because you are wise enough to attach your boat to the hook are "idiots". No experienced, responsible fisherman would ever bat an eye having to wait for you to just hook up. In fact, I bat any eye when I don't see someone hook-up. The possible alternative outcome would take far longer to remedy, and has been stated on here already, IT happens.

If you are that quick, then help the folks trhat are struggling. The fish don't bite until you start feeding them. It's not a competition who is the fastest.

If it is a multi lane ramp at a slow lake it is one thing but if it is a crowded lake like Fork where there may be fifteen + boats lined up it becomes a nightmare. I try to patiently wait my turn but on Fork it is hard to do because you will end up waiting an hour because of the guys that will run right on up in front of everyone, block the ramp and force your boat onto the bank while trying to take out or drive their truck in front of everyone else that is waiting to put in.

I dont think anyone really cares about if you hook or un hook when loading or launching. It takes an extra 60 seconds or so. Its the sit on the ramp load and prep your boat on a busy day type that makes everyone mad.

It seems kind of funny, but I don't believe the people that are getting chewed on in here just are not in here to get all the good advise they need. Hate when that happens

I always load everything in a parking space. Get everything checks, plug, tow straps. But I never undo the boat from the trailer. I always launch by myself. Unless I'm fishing with an experienced person. I will let my wife back in the last couple feet. But that's it. And I always get the motor running before I unhook. I know it takes time, but you start floating off one time with a dead battery, or a flooded motor, you won't do it again. It's tough to get back on the trailer from the middle of the lake without a motor.
