Alot of the crappie that I've been catching have fungus on them. The filets do not appear to be affected. Could somebody shed a little light as to why this is occuring.

There was some good reading there & it answered the main question - are these fish safe to eat? I copied this from the study

Wholesomeness of Fish with Red
Sore Disease
Fishermen often ask whether it is safe to eat game fish that
have sores on them. In most cases the sores are external
only, and when the fish is cleaned, the damaged area is
easily removed from edible tissue. Thorough cooking
will eliminate any pathogens that might remain in tissue,
resulting in a safe and wholesome product. Although the
appearance of a fish with sores on it may be unappetizing,
there is no reason to discard the fillets as long as they are
thoroughly cleaned and cooked.

Yep if they have sores they going back in the lake. The meat may be fine but the visual will not allow me to eat it. To many good crappie swimming around to worry about it.

I haven't seen one white crappie with such sores. I've seen plenty with sores on black crappies only. Have anyone seen any on whites?

ive had years where ive caught fish from texoma with red spot disease on them, and ive also caught them with fungus, or growth on their fins, they ate just fine. i know for a fact that red spot is a parasite passed on by snails and birds, and i read in a magazine that it doesnt affect humans. cant tell you much about fungus.

Yes, SMS white crappie get it also. We have very few blacks out west. I caught a white back in Jan. that had it pretty bad.
I put them back. I catch all I need without it. I won't put something that ugly in my live well, let alone eat it.
