I actually walk in a store knowing I don't need anything. Still seem to come out w/ a couple sacks full.

The other thing that i always notice is how little I see pros changing colors in a tournament. same thing on Ultimate Match. They hardly bring anything at all and i bet 90% of the plastics are always green pumpkin. The other thing that i always notice is how little I see pros changing colors in a tournament. same thing on Ultimate Match. They hardly bring anything at all and i bet 90% of the plastics are always green pumpkin. I fished with a guy who had spent quite a few years fishing the BASS trail. We were throwing carolina rigs on Rayburn and I asked him how and when he decided on the color of lizard he would use. He opened up his storage box and must have had 200 Pumpkin Seed lizards. He said he just couldn't see that lizard passing in front of a big old bass and the fish thinking he would wait for a watermelon seed lizard to come by before biting. He said it was a color and bait that he felt confident would work on any lake anytime of year and kept him from worrying if he was using the right bait or color and wasting time changing. Made sense to me.

when you are gettin ready for take off at a tournament don't fear the guy with a dozen rods on the deck. The guy with two rods on his deck is the one you have to worry about.

I love trying new baits but I have noticed the more I fish the less colors and baits in general i use. I know what I like and what gets me bit so I keep paring my soft plastics colors down to 2-3 that really get used and same with hardbaits. I tend to keep it simpler these days. seems like I catch more fish too. Don't know if its a coincidence but it seems related. I honestly think I could survive throwing green pumpkin soft plastics, black and blue jigs and shad pattern hardbaits all year and do just fine. Same here.

I saw a pro say "keep it simple" with worm colors--redbug, junebug, and green pumpkin. I've kept black too. We'll see how it works.

I read an article in bass masters a couple of years ago about this exact topic. I don't remember the pro but he was talking about only using three primary colors for all of his soft plastics. He believed more in the size and shape of the bait rather than the color. It always cracked him up when is non boaters would bring bags full with 20 different colors and spend more time trying to decide what color to throw than actually fishing. That article really hit me and it is how I approach my soft plastic fishing. I've got a peg board full of all sorts of different styles of plastics but their are only 4 colors you'll find them in.

shad colors/white, green pumpkin/watermelon, black variations. Only colors I buy. I couldn't care less what color flake is in it.

The guy with two rods on his deck is the one you have to worry about. That cause 2 rods is all I can afford.

Thought of this later on.
About 10-11 years ago I was with Marty Stone down at Eufaula. He was talking about jigs, how he had things organized to make something on the spur of the moment, etc. I asked what all he had.
He had a Plano Stowaway box of heads in different sizes, another box of football jig heads in different sizes, another box of shad-light colored skirts, another box of dark colored skirts, and more boxes with enough stuff to open Marty's Jig Store in his truck.
Then he said, "I have more in my truck at the ramp."
About 5-6 years later, I reminded him of that and asked if he'd pared his stuff. Box of jigheads, box of skirts. That's it.
Keep it simple and put it in the right spot.

My motto, whether cloths or fishing gear, if you have not touched it for 12 months, donate to good will or give to a kid.
As humans we tend to collect and not get rid of anything.
