Last year at the Arkansas River Open, I was running full throttle down river 25 miles, running around the area some, and then running 25 miles back to the weigh in. My Co-Angler for the day gave me $20!!! That is unacceptable in my opinion. $20 might have been enough 20 years ago but not with gas $3.69 a gallon at that time. It was your decision to run 25 miles down river, full throttle. $20 is fairly cheap, Id offer more than that, but it was your decision to make that run, not the co-angler. In your mind, what was an acceptable amount of money, for that trip and did you make the same run the next day? Yes, ran the same water and my day 2 Co angler gave me $60. Most of them do a minimum of $40. Even at registration, the tournament director advises the Co anglers to share expenses at a reasonable price. He always says "$20 dont cut it anymore guys". And by the way, 25 miles was nothing there! We could lock two locks up or one down. That is over 80 miles of the river $20 is too low, Im not gonna argue that for a second. $40 is minimum I will offer for gas and it will depend on how the day went from there (the price can go up and in rare cases, down lol). The first year I fished the Weekend Series, I drew Scott and we all know how well that worked out (for him lol). It was an enjoyable day on the water for me, netting his fish and learning alot. I offered $60 and he wouldnt accept more than $25. Granted, we didnt do alot of running, but to me it was a great day on the water so I wanted to offer extra. He won, for either the 2nd or 3rd consecutive year, I did manage to pick one off behind him so for me it was a slow day as far as catching, but an absolute pleasure to watch and learn from a guy like him. Great comment right there!

I only ever had one time I only gave $20 to my boater for gas, and its because we literally ran a mile or 2 and tied up to a tree and set there all day. And he acted pissed afterwards.
Now that I have become a boater I never expect my coangler to pay part of my gas. If they do thats great and it helps a lot but I will never be mad if they dont. I am the boater, I am making all the decisions and I would be going to the same place whether they were with me or not.
Good luck to everyone this year!

My Co-Angler for the day gave me $20!!! That is unacceptable in my opinion. $20 might have been enough 20 years ago but not with gas $3.69 a gallon at that time. Drew a Guy on the Quachita River a few years ago(gas was $2.00 a gal), thats was on the bend rod pattern. It was an 1 1/2 hr ride to this place that produced a 14" keeper for him. I was gonna stiff him for being such an idiot, but still gave him $40 and told him that if he woulda stopped @ 1 of the dozen outside bends in that river(that looked identical to the one we fished) that we passed on the way down there we would of had more time to fish just one place. Maybe the Guy only had $20 to his name, that is cheap by the way. What I'm saying is if I'm calling the shots for the day and all I have is water thats in the next state, I don't expect someone to pay my way to get there. But I'm not one to spend that much time running cause I've never caught a bass doing 70 MPH. Drop the Trolling motor and get after it.

Being a boater is just that... your the boater. If a CO wants to throw you some money for gas then thats an added bonus. If you are going to split expenses down the middle then they should have half the decision to pick spots and half of the water and we all know it doesnt EVER work like that. Just my

Im still saving for the boat I want, I could get 1 now but its not what Im wanting, I have also been a boater before. I will never take a dime from a Co, Im fishing because Its what I like to do, and none of my expenses change whether he is there or not. As a CoAngler, I do say a fair amount should be offered, its only right. If the boater takes it or declines it, that is his choice.

Come on guys, the fish are snappin on Lewisville.
I caught a 16 lber on Saturday prefishing Can I fish with you? I think your cooler is loaded with beer! Fjackie, the 16 lber was of the Opelousas variety, hit a jig on a big laydown, and the two 8 lbers? They were of the little drummer boy variety, hit crankbaits! Honestly though, I did catch a couple of nice keepers on Saturday. There are some fish biting.

I was on a solid pattern. I ended up with one 3lber and two unders of the right variety.

why do you have to have a co-angler anyway??? I really don't know and don't understand... Seems like if you wanna fish tourneys you should go get a boat and pay for all your stuff... I personally don't think I'd want someone I don't know fishing out of my boat with me.... What if you don't get along? You have to be miserable all day long with someone you aren't getting along with just because theres a rule out there that says you have to have a co-angler? I'm not just talking about this tourney... There are other bass clubs I've looked up that are done on a draw format or whatever you call it where a guy without a boat draws someone with a boat or vice versa... I don't know. To me its a lil strange. I sure would hate for someone I don't know disrespecting my boat or tearing up my seats or stepping on all my stuff, etc.... Maybe that sounds bad but its just weird to me. I'm all for shooting the bull with folks after the tourney and making buds at the weigh in's and stuff like that but when it comes to your own property I'd like to know the dude a little better before I got stuck fishing with em for 8 hours.

Would you rather "be stuck with someone" for 8 hours or have all your competition fish alone and get screwed out of your winnings by a cheater. It will happen I assure you. The pairings is a way of having observers. They wont get observers any other way without taking part of the entrys and paying a days wages to them. I wont pay 100 to sit and observe KVD all day, I dang sure wouldnt do it in an Amateur Event. A 20 dollar tournament is different, but If I was to pay 1000 and have a chance to win 45,000, I wouldnt not trust 1 other person to stay legit. Then, The co and boater should keep thier stuff neat so there isnt any stepping over stuff. Its hard to not get along if : 1 - have some morals and respect as a boater or co angler and not cast on the others spot if they catch something, yep...It goes both ways. 2 - dont talk a lot. I speak when in team tournaments or small tournaments, but In draw tournaments, im there to fish, not carry on conversations. Im as serious about the fishing as 90% of the boaters in that tournament.

This is great. This is my first time as a co angler and all of you guys back and forth is giving me a he$$ of an education.
I have been fishing for a long time, but rarely in tournys and never as a co angler and regardless of conditions, I am looking forward to this experience so close to home.
btw - for all of you haters out there, I hope we go mid 60s and sunny for week prior and 60's and overcast for the tourny days with great sacks to brag on. (you gotta be positive!)
PM me to let me know how it was!

I fished the BWS as a CO last year. Every tournament I handed the boater $40. Two times the boater wouldn't take it all, even after I pressed the issue. One time the boater just took $20 of it. Offer at least $40 every tournament, and you have lots of money to play with give them more. It's expensive to tow a boat and to run a boat. I made some good friends fishing the BWS it's a good trail to fish.

Ifa boater has to tow a boat 1 hour and I drove for 8 hours what happens? I normally offer 40-60 even if we run 10 miles, but getting to the lake is expensive for everyone.

You have to be miserable all day long with someone you aren't getting along with just because theres a rule out there that says you have to have a co-angler? Like I said I fished the BWS last year as a co. I never drew anybody that was hard to get along with. Just the opposite, everybody I drew was extremely easy to get along with. Not one problem. All the ones I drew offered anything in their boat, from food and drinks to baits. Yea there were a couple of times I wish the boater would have done something different. But I never said a word, it was their boat and it cost them allot more to fish than me. I always tried to take care of their boat better than I would my own. Try your best to not have mud on your shoes when you step in the boat. Go out of your way to avoid any dirt or mud that you might have to step in. Clean them the best you can. Never ever step on the seats, don't leave bits of trash or plastics or cookie crumbs laying in their boat. And if you are fishing around docks and you see the boat or motor getting close to something that might scratch it stop fishing and go give it a little nudge to keep it off the dock.
