I would hate to think of what I have WON vs what I spent. Since fidhing tournaments for over 30 years, who knows. I so remember my first win, It was on Grapevine, a all nighter. Had BB too , took home $380.00, have won a boat or two during that time, cashed alot of checks, even lost the desire to fish once, but now that you think of it, I dont think I will ever break even:
this is how I look at it after 30 years of tournament fishing
Tournament Fishing - 200k Tow Vehicles - 200K Boats - 300k Making life long friends, seeing new places and having fun - PRICELESS !!!!

-a bunch of $ over the last 10 yrs
But on friday nights I have been in my bed early to get up for sat's tournament, while many hit the bars and drop $50-$75 avg. 50 a week times 10 yrs. Is $ 26,000 I fish small tournaments so I may spend $100 a month in entry fees and over 10 yrs thats 12k and in tackle for tournaments not counting stuff I would purchase anyway and I am at maybe 18-20k. The great thing is not toomany people sitting in rehab for fishing or driving while fishing or fishing manslaughter. All in all I think I made the right choice on what I do on the weeekends.

Deeeeeeeeppppp in the hole.
Prior to this I drag raced and bar hopped. Figure 20k a year minimum in entry fees, repairs, and fuel plus another small fortune in the winter to freshen up a motor or update electronics etc. Then throw in 200 bucks a weekend drinking......
I'm making money fishing comparatively speaking.

I was sitting here thinking how expensive tournament fishing was getting, and started to wonder how much I've really won since I started. I started looking around at the plaques on my wall and tried to remember how much I won for them. I have the envelopes from my very first win framed from a Tuesday nighter on Lake Ray Hubbard on May 13, 1997. I was 19 years old. I won $390. $220 for first, and $170 for bb. Then followed that with winning the championship in October, on Grapivine, with Tommy Climer for $680. We were both so broke if we didn't win that we wouldn't have been able to buy What a Burger on way home! All in all the best I can figure from then to now i'm at $104,000 and change. Kind of sad when you divide it out over that many years, and add in the cost of fishing!! That's between me and the IRS.

Red ink all over the sheet if you thing about it like that.
Gas is just about to put tourney fishing out of range. I do it cause I love to be competitive and fish. I loved playing sports when I was younger everything from Football to volley ball.
Tourney fishing has replaced that comptetive sport drive for me. So thats why I go.
If I based it on financial decisions I sure as hewll would not be tourney fishing.
