Was fishing with a guide this past spring on Moss Lake up by Gainsvelle - when we got in the boat he offered a water proof container to put my cell and wallet in with his. He was fishing with a high end Kistler rod and a shimano Core - He went to set the hook on a fish and it popped out of his hands - I dont remember ever seeing anyone jump in the water so quickly - we were in 20' of water - The trick was getting him back in the boat. I said well at least your wallet and cellphone are dry. Just made for a great day on the water. Later on that day my son who was just back from Boot Camp was fishing with us slung a Carolina Rig across my ear slinging my $450 pair of glasses in the lake - I fished the rest of the day casting at Shawdows - but Hey! I caught fish!~

Yes I have. I was fishing at the RR bridge with Joe Axton one cold December day at Monticello. It was before he had his place at Fork but he had his tackle shop in Mesquite.

Joe had a habit of leaving about 3 feet of line hanging off his rodtip when he cast. This wasn't so bad until he picked up his C-rig rod and his line wrapped around one of my rods on the front deck. When he cast, it flung one of my rod & reels off in the water.

We lost every jigging spoon in my boat trying to snag it. Never did. But Joe made it good when we got back to his tackle shop. he replaced it gladly. He was a good man. Rest in Peace Joe. We miss you.

Me and my partner were fishing a tourney down at Martin Creek. He set the hook on a nice fish and told me to grab the net. I was fishing a spinnerbait and instead of reeling in the lure I dropped my rod on the back deck and grabbed the net. After we land the fish I look back and my rod is gone. About 30 ft behind us was the butt of the cork handle floating in the water. It must have been my luckey day. Because we won the tourney after that. But I didn't catch a fish on that rod the rest of the day?

Never thrown one but I did lean one against the motor on the back of the boat and picked up another rod and snagged it when i made a cast throwing it in the lake. One of the old green curados on a falcon lowrider laying on the bottom of pines. Also managed to kick of a stradic attached to a carrot stix. Bad part is i didnt notice until I went to get it and it was gone. It's on the bottom of lone star somewhere

Went bank fishing at a private lake in high school with some friends. One friend brought his brother's rod and reel. Expensive reel and I dunno about the rod. About the third cast he tried to cast far and the handle broke. The reel and most of the pole went flying into the lake. I died laughing. Luckily the water was fairly clear and he was able to go for a swim and retrieve the reel.

Last year went fishing with a friend. Several boats in the area. I looked over at another lone boater and right then he went to cast and tossed the entire pole straight into the water. I tried not to laugh. He started cussing and asked if I saw that. He said it was the third time it has happened to him. That makes for some expensive fishing.

Well let's see, got 2 in Whitney trying to teach the wife how to use a baitcaster that was 40ys ago, now fast forward to today.
Up around Rainswood on the old roadbed theres one, Birch theres 2,515 bridge theres 2, Mustang 1,No Name 1,Wolf 1,Back of Lil Caney 2,so how did all this happen, from teaching people on how to throw, wife putting rods down at bridge while crappie fishing, having a night partner that had a bad habit of kicking rods into lake. Moral of the story....Find someone else to teach your wife and kids, never eat while crappie fishing, fish with someone who has small feet

Never lost a rod, but I did have a friend that was fishing in the back snag my keys out of the ignition and cast them into the lake.

Three times that I can remember.

First time in the 80's on Bob Sandlin had a date drop one in 20 feet and a week later her brother came with us with scuba gear and found it in water that didn't seem clear enough but he could see the rainbow colors on a Diawa Millionaire.

Second time was a private watershed lake in Kansas when I slept through a strike and he jerked out of my hands, I went in after it feet first and when I hit the bottom the rod was bumping my chest. Grabbed it and came to the surface and landed the 6-5 that was still on and unhappy.

Third time was last month at Falcon in 5 ft. Slipped off the back of the boat, so I jumped in and after a few minutes we were both back in the boat. My rods have nine lives.

This past May I was fishing a favorite hump for hybrids on Palestine. The wind was blowing hard and I had one hand on the trolling motor and my butt pushed up against the butt seat and trying to stay in the boat. I had made a cast and one hit the bait I set the hook with one hand and in an instant I was watching a $250 set up flying through the air. I tried for an hour to find that rod. Two weeks later fishing about 30 yds. off that hump I hooked my line and pulled up my rod. Pretty cool.

Also back in the early 80's I was trolling the I-30 riprap on Lake Ray hubbard catching striper's real good one evening.Caught a 8 pounder and had my rod hanging off the side of the boat,I took the pliers and unhooked the striper. Then just fliped the bait over my shoulder forgeting the rod was hanging over and heard a splash! Dang there went a Browning 7 ft. rod w/Garcia 55c reel over board. One week later to the day I was trolling the same spot, and a boat going the opposite way was trolling aswell.I saw them hang a rod & reel and bring it up.So I turned around and ask the if it was a Browning rod with a Garcia 55c reel with a Bagley killer B-1 bait. And they said yes it is,so I told them about losing it a week ago. They were nice enought to let me have it back!

First time was on Lake Castaic in so calif. son and I had just put sun block on and then I cast over some brush and had a hit. Yep, slippery hands and there goes my rod and reel sailing. With out even thinking I stepped off the boat and caught the handle just as it hit the water. Handed the rod to my son and he landed the bass and of course claimed the catch.

Next time on Toledo Bend Lake a friend from Ca was visting and we went out. He rared back to cast and the rod went out of the boat at the back of his cast.

Another time a friend of mine that guided on Toledo Bend ask me to go fishing with him. Not sure how he lost the rod and reel overboard but he did in about 30 ft. of water. We drug for an hour and never got it.

Some of my best fishing years were in CA and on Toledo Bend Lake when I lived in each of these places.

Fishing Whitney today, I was somehow casting a spoon which grabbed my 7'10" rod/reel from behind me and threw it about 15' from the boat in about 15' of water. Yes, I know...crazy. I tried for a bit to fish it out with no luck. Figuring I was down 250.00 or so, I went ahead and kept fishing our Church tournament. About 30 minutes later I went around the point to the other side and saw a boat with a scuba flag. I thought...hmmm. So I told the guy I'd give him 20 bucks to go under and get my rod/reel. He gladly did it...since it paid for his air for the day. So the way I look at it, I saved 230 bucks and he got free air! smile

One night while night fishing at Monty my buddy threw one of my rod/reels in the lake about 3:00 am. I threw out a marker buoy and told him to keep fishing. We were working the pipeline back in the timber and I figured we could snag it once it got light.

About 8 am we went back to the spot and proceeded to drag spoons, little georges, and slabs trying to get it. No luck... I told him he owed me a rod & reel so I grabbed the marker buoy and started rolling up the line.

Lo & behold, the lead weight that was unrolled off the line had snagged the rod perfectly and we lifted it into the boat!
