I had a handle break off once when I cast, left me holding a foam covered handle (Berkeley as I recall) while my reel, line & the rest of the rod went sailing into the lake, drug with a spoon for a while but never found it. Old Shimano Bantam Mag on there too, I liked that reel

That makes sense now! Thansk for the explanation Tony.

Last spring Alton K and I were fishing Fork and I was on the front of the boat holding the boat into the wind on our spot and Alton was on the back deck casting across a creek channel when all of a sudden I hear a huge splash, I look back and he is gone!! Now this is when we first met and all I could think was I don't know him well and had no idea what was going on. He stayed down a while and I was about to bail off the boat and look for him when he shot to top of the water with his rod above his head and said, "I got it!" He had his phone , wallet and keys in his pockets and the water was still pretty chilly. He had set the hook and his rod and reel shot out of his hand.

I was never so glad to see someone surface!!!

We all stumble and make mistakes. When you stumble, do you want your brother to help knock you down or to help set you back on your feet?

I had a friend of mine launch one of mine in the Lake Winnsboro one time. He rared back with a carolina rig and snagged one of my rods. When he came forward my rod went end over end about 30 ft into the lake. Luckily the hook was still hooked to the eye of the rod. He was able to just reel it back in.

I also had (same friend) lose his rod twice int he same day setting the hook away from his hand on a carolina rig. He would jump in, grab the rod, and swim over to me and hand me the rod. I would get to catch the fish. It has great.

Set the hook first, ask questions later!!!

Was fishing in the Whiskey Bay area of LA with my dad as a youngin. Caught a nice sized catfish, fought him all the way to the boat. My dad gets a picture of me and the fish. He says "Now toss her back". Im not sure what came over me at this point but I held on to the fish, and tossed my rod/reel overboard into about 25ft of water. Still not sure how my dad didn't kill me

Tony - Your too hardcore for those pretty 50MGs.

All your years of guiding how many rods and reels have clients lost overboard?

Used to be a guy in a bass club I was in long ago that would throw his rod/reel combos in the lake when he got irritated with them. He never got crazier than that so far as I ever heard. No one ever cut him off though.

My Brother and I went to Amistad this past spring. Arrived late and we were anxious to get on the lake. Put our rods and reels on the deck and started out but forgot the PFd's which were in the starboard side rod compartment. I lifted the lid, brother forgot to strap down the rods and a brand new, never fished Abu and BPS 7'6" went in the water. My brother had the attitude, we will find in when we return to the dock. If you are ever at Black Brush Point drag approximately 20 feet in front of the dock and you might find a pretty nice C4 and BPS rod, we never did.

When I was about 7 years old, a kind lady we picked up each Sunday morning to attend church (so she wouldn't have to walk) gave me one of her late husband's fishing rods.

I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It was green fiberglass, somewhat transparent and had real cork handles! Wow!

Made a cast while fishing with my father below Wheeler Dam (in Alabama) and threw it overboard. How? Don't have a damn clue. I think it just slipped out of my hands.

I think my father and I had the same looks on our faces.

A good way to get a rod and reel back is to have one of the metal clip style stringers. Open all the clips and tie the end to some twine or rope and drag it around it'll snag the rod and reel when spoons and other stuff don't. I haven't had a rod go over board however a few different times I've had a partner nearly lose a rod in the back of the boat to fish.

1 had a dropshot tied on with a gulp minnow on it and had the minnow over the side and in the water to keep it from drying out when a fish took off with it. Had one rod guide not caught the edge of the boat it would have disappear without either of us knowing. We heard the sound of drag slipping and looked at each other thinking the other had a fish on when my partner saw his rod move and start to go over.

The other time we where fishing and I had a fish on and my partner set the rod down to net the fish. We where bumping the fish when we heard his rod sliding down the side of the boat. I dove over the console and grabed the rod and set the hook. He got the rod and reeled the fish in while I checked the other fish and then netted his. He had a 3 lber and mine wound up being in the slot for the lake we where on.
