Not to hijack your thread, but DO IT, it's incredible!!!! I got to do 2 dives a day for a week, and even sleep in AC. Even fish some during the downtime. Shoot me a message if you want more info.

im no expert, but i think brookies are the only "trout" that is a char. and brookies inetrbreed with browns. but like said, this is what my books tell me, so i could be completetly wrong

My son worked at Philmont for a couple of summers. I went and visited for a week. He and I fished the Reyado a couple of times and hammered the small trout, including a couple of browns. They were really hitting an Adams parachute dry fly. Had a great time that trip and caught browns, rainbows, brook. and cutthroat trout.

Well done up there.

Congrats on the fish and the Philmont expereince! I was out there in 2005 and had a great time! Would recommend it to any one that likes hiking, or just hanging around base camp in an awesome setting. Did you take the time to go see the T-Rex tracks on the ranch? The only known tracks in existance.

FISH ON!!! ummmmm off

With the blotches not being vertical, I wouldn't think they are par marks, and although it's not a big fish, it looks to be old enough to have lost its par marks, anyway. The absence of the "cut" tells me it is more than likely a cutbow.

Thank you, I thought it might have been pure at first, but it at least to me, looks more cut than bow.

It's more than the catfish would do.

Pretty sure all cutbows have at least have a faint slash. At least I've never seen one that didn't. Plus those parr marks are in line with a young rainbow.

Pretty sure carpenter had it right with immature rainbow. Especially after you said it came out of a creek. If from a lake then I would've wondered because stockers don't have the parr marks.

Thanks for the trip report. It brought back memories of my two trips to Philmont. Of course, that was a long time ago, but I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Do they still sell the unstrained leather belts with all the Philmont logos? Seems like everyone used to bring one of those belts home with them.

I enjoyed scouting when my two of my sons were on their journey to Eagles - couldn't send them to Philmont tho, too poor... smile
Eagle Scout and Scoutmaster son Steve got to go later in life when he took several of his troop to Philmont, including my grandson Eagle Scout Garrett. I got to go in spirit tho - bought him a pack fly rod and he learned to tie a fly that I have on my desk.

Garrett is Director of Shooting Sports in San Antonio Council camp this summer and last.

Great report. I love to see that young men are still enjoying Scouting. I spent approximately 19.5 years in Scouting and achieved the rank of Eagle with a silver palm. I am about to get back into it again as an adult volunteer. I also was too poor to go to Philmont as a young man but intent to go as an adult in the near future.

I was lucky enough to enjoy the opportunity of Philmont and becoming an Eagle Scout. Truly a remakable experience. Great report indeed!

If I can give any advice for Philmont it is to GET INTO SHAPE!
I went when I was 14, might I say that was a little to young becuase my pack weighed half my body weight. I'm sure I would have enjoyed it much more if I had be a little older but the experience definately overwhelmed the pain.
