Is it any less fun to catch a fish on a minnow than a powerworm. . .hell no. Enough said....

Ive been chasing a record and am bout to start fishing live bait myself. I do think that artificials to live bait is like "bass fisherman" to "angler".
Bass fishing is like a 30,000 acre golf course with no flags and five holes you can't see- Tim

I know 3 or 4 of the SALs from Ivie were caught on live baits. . .and this was always understood. . .I just cant understand the big issue. Every summer I fish with small perch and minnows for bass when theyre deep and slow. . .and I dont guthook any more live bait fish than I do lure fish.
I can't help but to think some of this comes from jealousy. I've personally seen people get all kinds of p!ssed when they told me they had got skunked and asked how I was catching all those fish out in the middle of the lake, tell them minnows and they instantly are mad. Makes me laugh.
Is it "less sporting" to use live bait. . .maybe. Is it any less fun to catch a fish on a minnow than a powerworm. . .hell no. It is not a big deal. I don't think one person in here has stated as such. End of story.

I think this thread took a surprising turn and didn't work out the way it was intended lol. Good fishing to all whatever bait you choose or technique!

Live bait can be a blast, I'll admit it openly. Haven't used it in a while, when I did it was for our daughters or grandkids to catch some nice fish too see how fun it can be.. I believe it's one of the easiest and quickest ways for beginners to get a feel for the passion we have for the sport. In the dog-days of summer nursing a cool beverage under the bimini soaking a perch is might fine by me.. Might do it this weekend, you guys got me all fired up thinking about it.. LOL.

Me too Billy, I'm in need of a weekend off. Me and ol slick-belly may go to T-wok in the morning for hybrids, soak perch in the middle of the day on Fork, then topwater on Fork, and close out the day hog hunting off 515 and 154 hehehehehehe

If you fish live use circle hooks... you could see mortality drop down to almost zero. We get at least 5 or so "overs" every year from deep structure on live Shad (biggest 7 pounds).
I've always wanted to go to Florida and float huge Shiners under balloons...Looks like a blast!

As far as mortality rate goes I just got off the phone with the TPWD inland fisheries director Dave Terre, he said they did a study a fee years ago that concluded a Carolina rig worm cause more fish deaths than live bait. The more slinder the bait the more likely the fish was to swallow it. He also stated that there will be no long term affect dud to live bait fishig, his biggest deal was....What ever it takes to get novice anglers bit!!!!!!!!!!

I've deep hooked more fish on carolina rigs than live bait. Usually with live bait, you will know ahead of time when you're about to get bit. My rod tip would always go bazerk right before the bite.

I live baited a 25 lb yellowfin tuna with a 24/0 Circle hook bridled on his nose. Unfortunately, before a blue marlin got to him, An 700+lb mako came up and ate him and cut right through our 500lb fluro leader... We thought it was a blue at first, we were in a big offshore tourney and we were already seeing the $ signs. Point is, it can be pretty cool to live bait.
