I am right handed but I taught myself to cast left handed when i got to having pain in my right elbow. No more missed bits from having to switch hands.

Growing up my grandpa spent a lot of time teaching me to throw left and reel right handed. Comes in handy not having to switch hands. Only problems is I can not use left handed spinning gear....

LOL - with you on that one!

I am a southpaw and ALWAYS throw with left hand and reel with the right. When the bait hits the water ur ready to go with no switching.

Any reason I shouldn't use the baitcaster casting and holding right handed, reeling left? thanks.

I'm right handed and use left handed baitcast reels. Just feels better to me. I was so used the spinning reels that when i held the right handed baitcast reel it just felt wrong. Go with the left handed models and it should feel better for you. IMO

I am glad you brought this up. I have been curious about this for awhile now. A buddy of mine keeps buying lefty reel and I keep telling him he is crazy. He is from California so I think he is used to the spinning reel because he is right handed. He tells me its because he doesn't like to switch hands after casting.
Just crazy. Craziness I say!

If your right handed, cast right, reel right. Its just right smile

I reel with my left. I guess I don't see any good reason to switch hands. It's just an extra step and takes time. I'm pretty sure if you take 2 equally skilled people, one with a righty and one with a lefty, and count the casts they make in a day, I'd be willing to bet the guy not switching hands makes more casts. That means more time with the bait in the water and strike zone. I could be wrong but I see no reason to reel right except for thats just how some people learned, even if it is back asswards.

P.S. I suck with baitcasting so don't listen to nuthin I say smile

I did the same thing ended up trying to crank the rod while holding the reel handle still! I felt like Steve Martin in The Jerk.
I just taught myself to cast left handed.

Retirement best job ever.

If you switch and take on the LH reels being RH, you will never look back after you get use to it. We had fished with spinning gear growing up, so it was very natural to make the switch as companies began to make a reel for RH people. I brought my son up on LH retrieve reels. True RH reels.
