I have only fished that section of the Brazos once with Andy Moreau, about 10 years ago. I was amazed at the quality of bass I saw. But, I have not been back down there, since. We have a 17' canoe. And I have never been to Dick's. Do they have a website?

My birthday is in June and my wife asked if I could do anything what would it be. I gave the obligatory
Me: "Something with the family would be nice." She: "you wouldn't rather go fishing by yourself all day." Me: "That would be fun but without a boat i'm kept to rivers and streams in the pontoon" She: "Anything near my dad's in Whitney?" Me: "well there is this stretch of the Brazos below the Dam." She "How long would it take to float" Me: "Not sure" Her: "OK"
SOOOOOO...Give me lots of good news after your trip so I know what to expect!!

What section of the river is better for fishing, the stretch below PK or the stretch below Whitney?
Is the whitney stretch better for a one day trip that the below PK.
Thanks

If your talking the upper stretch below PK, it would be a sucky one day trip! It's 19 miles before take out. The fish are there and willing, but it can't be floated and fished in one day. The stretch from rochelles (hwy 4) down to their private take out is 8 miles and can be done in one day. And fish are there as well. Haven't fished below whitney yet.

You can do and up and back from Rochelles or a down and back from the PK dam Both are good for day trip.
Same for 2114 below Whitney - But only head upstream to start, or your in for a tough paddle up stream if the generating starts. plus, Going up has deeper stretches.
But for 3? miles below 2114 the river stays straight and shallow, Right ? Pretty un productive when the waters down.
A Below Whitney down and back trip - eh, again too much straight shallow river for my tastes, it's just alot of WORK. That trip is best done all down stream, to 2114 and needs 11 hours with out the flow. The paddling alone takes like 4 - 5 hours ?

Unless you are wearing a grass skirt and sleeping in a ditch and eating only road kill, you too are part of 'the problem'.

Whitney is great, put in a Dick's and paddle up, then float back. Flows permiting that is. Some one else chime in here.
It's more than the catfish would do.

flows are low, and if you are going upstream, you are dragging your yak behind you!!

Right now at the bridge at Dicks,554cfm. If you made arrangment with Richard at 7:30am.Your float would be easy with out draging it.

11 of us made the trip down the river but only 10 made it back. Our fishing buddy Ray Nichols went missing on the return paddle to the dam. Sheriff, game warden, park rangers & Search and rescue looked for him until about 1:30am. Found his capsized duck boat around 11:30 PM but no sign of Ray. The search resumed at daylight Tuesday morning. No word as of 11:30 AM Tuesday.
Ray does not and did not wear a PDF, if he had this would have had a different outcome. He had health issues that might have contributed but other factors could be at fault. Right about the time frame Ray went missing the river came up due to power generation so the current increased in one direction and the wind gusts in the other up to 30+ mph and his duck boat sits high in the water. We may never know for sure what happened but I'm afraid the outcome is the same.
Up until that point the trip was a success, The Brazos below Whitney is a very special place deserving respect for the beauty and power of nature because it can all go south in a heart beat.
Pray for the grieving ones left here below.

That is a damned tough deal. I'll certainly join in the prayers.
