years ago on my home lake me and my dad fished the local weeknight tourneys there, and it was a long standing joke to find fish follow us, but it pays to have a fast boat because we would always be there first no matter what order was drawn.

fast forward two decades, and i went out to fish in a new boat i had just bought, didn't pay attention to the tourney schedule and there was a tourney that morning.

fog was really, really bad and i stopped at the mouth of a popular creek that everyone fishes further back in, it was to foggy to run th e creek first thing so i dropped troll at the mouth and so did at least 10 other boats right after.

We got on some serious fish by accident, pulling in 4-5lbers all morning one after the next and no one else within seeing distance was catching anything.

I truly expected to see 10 boats up on that spot the next weekend but nope not a one, i hammered them there for 2 more weeks before the fished moved off.

I was truly shocked.

it's not always like that

I want someone to start marking "their" spots that way when I pull up I know to not fish it. Also if you are fishing a tournament and your going to a certain spot put a no trespassing sign up that way other fishermen know it "your" spot. I understand the whole hold jumping but as already stated how do you know they didn't find it without seeing you there. This is the one thing I have never understood about bass fishermen some of us really do believe we own the lake.

The fish own the lake. We just bombard it and lay stake to every place we catch decent ones as though every other fisherman out there knows we're out there and should be aware that we are claiming those spots as our own and beware our wrath should we get a hankerin to revisit our spot unannounced and they are present....How dare they?????? Thats mine....get gone....hole jumpin bastage!!! Guess ya can't expect em to know the lake i'm currently fishen changed it's name cause I was in it that day to "LAKE JUSTICE" ! The nerve.......

Just a thought....

I agree w/ Hitman.
Until and unless somebody writes the ultimate, enforceable 'rule book for bass fishing' (which I'm NOT advocating) we're all going to continue floating from spot to spot with our own self-conjured ideas about what's right and wrong on the water. Even an approach that encourages 'using common sense courtesy and sportsmanship' leaves so much room for personal interpretation and judgment that we shouldn't expect other anglers to share our view of things. Bottom line: we can't and shouldn't try to control other people. We CAN control and manage our own expectations. Why should we go into a fishing day or tournament expecting other people to know what and how we're thinking? When we do that, we're just setting ourselves up for disappointment and allowing other people to mess with our minds.

I know there will always be a-holes with no heart that will keep doing it, I consider them as bad as Robby rose. That's pretty much what their doing... STEALING! The reason you see guys consistently at the top is because they put so much time into it learning how to find fish, not by hole jumping people. So comment how you want, wont bother me none, but someone had to stand up and say it.

That stuff happens all the time, I even had a tourney fisherman ask me where Bob Green heads out to first. I told him that was Bob's business

Not that I ever fish tournaments or even have a desire too, but my momma didn't raise no fool. I will not spy on you but if I happen to see you catching fish in a particular spot you can bet I will check that spot out for myself sometime later when no one else is fishing it. Its like playing cards, I am not looking to cheat but if you accidently show me your hand I would be a fool not to play according to what I just saw.

very seldom do fisherman find fish or structure that others haven't already found. Personally i like to fish after another guy and rip lips where he couldn't. Even if the other fisherman are on the spot you have picked out, that doesnt mean they will produce the fish you can. Their used to be ethics in everything but the term cheaters never win dont apply to tourney fishing. Fisherman gain knowledge from other fisherman, now thats what I call ethical. Sharing knowledge is one thing but sometimes there can be hard to swallow situations like this that makes everyone wonder. Part of Tourney fishing requires extensive research and seeing fish being caught probably fall into that catagory. Does that make it right?? No or Yes

Never, ever bet a tournament on one hole. The wind may be blowing the wrong way, someone else may be on it, or they may just stop biting. Always have a backup and a backup for the backup, etc. You get the idea.

I don't believe there is anyone here on this forum that would not go to a hole simply because they had seen someone else catch fish there. Everyone would make a mental note and check it out at a later date when the opportunity arose. Is there anything wrong with that? I don't think so. Remeber that everyone has to learn how to fish a spot. Just because you catch fish there, don't mean that everyone can.

Good fishermen do not win tournaments by having the best hole. They win by knowing how to pattern fish and make the adjustments necessary to stay on top of them and to change when the fish do. It's all about the pattern - not the spot.

If I'm fishing a tournament and I know old so and so fishes in a certain spot, and he is fishing the same tournament I probably wouldn't go there. If he's not fishing, I might. It just depends on whether or not the spot fits the pattern I have worked out before every tournament. On top of that I would not fish a spot in a tournament without practicing it first. Does that now make it mine?

This really sounds like small potatoes to me. Just remember that if you are fishing a tournament you have to plan for every contingency, which includes your starting spot being covered up.
