My dad got a tree limb and gave the snake all it could handle. It turned the fish loose and slithered away into the night. My dad took ALL the fish off the stringer and let em go! He was not sure if any of the others had been bitten and were "laden with poison"(his words) and wasn't about to find out by eating them!

One of the best night trips he and i ever had for slab crappie, and we had NOTHING to show for it!

I was so sad!

The poison needs to enter the bloodstream to be effective. The fish were fine to eat.

I saw a fat snake on the shore yesterday, it was mostly brown.

I whacked it with my rod and it shot back in the water.

I have no idea what the eyes were shaped like.

Any ideas?

hard to tell in pic but look round to me....always heard all venomous snakes have cat eyes pupils.........

Not all venomous, but almost all venomous in Texas. All Pit Viper species around the world do, and that includes Rattlers, Copperheads, and up Water Moccasins.

The only venomous snake in Texas that does not have vertical pupils is the Coral Snake, as it is not a member of the Pit Viper family.

Based on that, I don't think it's a Cottomouth after looking closely at the eye.

Very cool picture whatever it is!

The best snake is a dead one, in my opinion.

Unless the snake was able to close his gills, he doesn't suffocate it the same as an amphibian. Just a question.

Maybe there was something wrong with the catfish, like maybe it was sick or something. I have seen this same thing play out a dozen times, watersnake + decent sized catfish = always the same result. I would imagine that what we are looking at in this picture is a wore out catfish on the tail end of an hour or so match with a skilled hunter.

In the battle of fish vs. snakes, the fish are still comfortably in the lead.

I'm thinking your eyes were the size and shape of pie plates.

I'm not gonna get close enough to look in it's eyes. They are all treated the same with me. Even if it isn't poisonous, if it were to bite me I'd have a heart attack or kill myself trying to get away...sooooooooo they are all poisonous in my opinion and there is absolutely NO use for them. Bullet, boat oar, bat, hoe, stick, rock, car tire, fishing pole...all are good weapons when combating one of these creatures. I have a perimeter that one of these things needs to stay out of and I will do my best to leave it alone...come close and IT"S ON.

You know what the bad thing is????? I will not think twice about breaking a 300 dollar rod over a snake. I know, I've seen me do it! But if someone throws my rods around i will get onto them. Kinda sad actually. Never been accused for being the sharpest tool in the shed!!!!
