I agree, great pic! And I don't plan to get close enough to see if the eyes are round or slits!

Not a cottommouth yet triangular head:

Thanks for this post and sharing the cool pics. Cottonmouth or not, it's always cool to see a water snake eating fish.

Had a big cottonmouth do that to me and my dad once. We were night fishing(me fishing at night!-what a surprise!), heard the stringer moving UP the bank from the water! Shined a light, a 4 ft cottonmouth as thick as a boy's forearm was slithering up the bank with the head of a 12 inch crappie halfway in its mouth, dragging the rest of the near limit filled stringer behind it! My dad got a tree limb and gave the snake all it could handle. It turned the fish loose and slithered away into the night. My dad took ALL the fish off the stringer and let em go! He was not sure if any of the others had been bitten and were "laden with poison"(his words) and wasn't about to find out by eating them!

One of the best night trips he and i ever had for slab crappie, and we had NOTHING to show for it!

I was so sad!

I saw something similar to this when I was about 12 or so at Eisenhower Park Pond. Saw a cottonmouth streaking through the water with a channel cat in his mouth. He flipped it around head first, swallowed it head first, the crawled off under a cypress tree.

I am not an expert on cottonmouths, but how would a non venomous snake be holding on to a decent sized catfish while the catfish seems out of the fight! Again, not arguing that it isn't a cotton mouth. Logic of the eye shape is sound, but why didn't the catfish fight back. Unless the snake was able to close his gills, he doesn't suffocate it the same as an amphibian. Just a question.
