We missed a bunch of fish when we first started. Still do sometimes, especially if we are finding alot of short fish.
Big thing is to be VERY aware of your line movement.

Couple of thoughts I have on the flukes:
1. Offset shank wide gap hooks are a must.
2. Always hook from the slit up through the back, then oh so barely put the point back into the plastic. The fluke is alot thicker than a worm, so I don't want much holding that hook back. Bury it too much and you just set the hook into the fluke.
3. 6-6 or 7 foot rods are a huge aid in hook set. Also helps the cast if you are going light.
4. Watch the line...watch the line...watch the line. Sometimes during subtle presentations or higher wind(especially when fishing light weights), you might not feel the hit on the fall. You have to look for any lateral motion in your line, pull in the slack quick and easy, then wham.
5. Use a long firm sweeping hook set.
6. Did I mention watch the line??? They like these things on the fall!

If you are swinging and flat missing the fish chances are they aren't bass at all. Bream are starting to bed up now and they will drive you nutz fishing a Fluke in shallow water this time of year.

If you use a wide gap Gammy or Owner hook in 3/0 to 5/0 you aren't going to miss a bass if he is over a pound.

Definitely second Ken on the bluegill/bream. They will pepper the heck out of it.

Inexpensive too.

+1

This method works really well. I also do this on spinnerbaits when i want more weight. Here is a Bass Pro

I like to add a split shot about 6" from the hook. Leaves the action of the bait as close to normal as possible.
