Buy Ernest's Crappie DVD, you will learn that hi vis is great and you will probably understand more about crappie fishing in 1 hr than it would take you in several years and many trips.

validated a lot of things for me!

Last fall I switched one jiggin pole over to 10# (4# dia) Fireline Flame Green Hi Vis braid. After one trip I switched all of my jiggin poles over to it. The only crappie pole that doesn't have braid on it now is my dock shooter.
You will hear complaints about how expensive braid is.....which it is when compared to mono, but when you can keep the same line on a reel for 3-5 years as some guys do I tend to think it's cheaper in the longrun than mono. Cost wasn't as important to me as the sensitivity you get with braid, I know that I have caught crappie using braid that I never would have caught using mono, especially vertical jiggin deep brush.
Just my two cents worth.

Call me old fashion, but I like the good old plastic lines...either mono or flouro...
More frustration of braid line wrapping the tip of the rod than it's worth especially on windy days.
The way I see it... If the fish break me off, he/she deserves a chance to grow bigger!!! 99% of the time, a crappie break off a 6# test because the line has nick and scratches (angler's fault). What ever happened to the invention of DRAGS on a typical reel? Why are there so many crappie anglers are so into bullying the small tiny little crappie is beyond me... Unless all that angler ever want is fillet after fillets...
As far as feeling the hit between the braid vs flouro, rarely do I NOT feel something is messing w/ my jig so there is no factor there.
Actually, I don't even use Hi-Vis much... I only use Hi-Vis mostly on dockshooter rods. If I can't feel the hit vertical jigging, then I am not jigging it right....

Too many afraid of loosing a jig than afraid of ruining a good fishing spot. Getting the jig back by tough braid line only to mess up a good brush holding fish?...NO THANKS!!! rather loose a jig, than spook the fish. After all, locating the fish to me is 90% of the work... (even when the brush isn't holding fish, breaking off a branch to get a jig back isn't worth it)...My 2cents!

SMS- I concur with your sentiments outlined on treating the area you find the fish like it is 'gold' and not disturbing it when hung up. As well as utilizing the drag when you hook into a fish, nothing feels better than to play the fish on ultralight gear. banana I rarely keep the fish I catch for myself. I am more into the 'purpose' of fishing rather than the 'hunt for food'. My main reason for looking into another line is the constant need to re-spool my gear before I leave on a trip. I went out yesterday and as always I test my gear. The 6LB suffix seige I have on my reels was already curled so bad that I could not pitch a 1/8th or 1/16th oz jig. It's been 2 weeks since I last spooled and had a productive fishing trip. That is a major irritant.I don't like the cost of the braid; however, if I can get more than one good trip out of it in a 2 week time period, I'm a happy camper. Thanks for all the opinion and suggestions... thumb

Vicious has very little to no memory. Never have that problem anymore.

Equinox, the Sufix Siege may be your problem. It's a stiffer line. Try Sufix Elite, it works better on spinning reels.

I've used the Fireline / fluoro combination for over a year now and really like the feel. I tried using 8# P Line a couple of weeks ago and promptly went back to the Fireline.

Equinox,
If you'd like to experiment with a spool of fused braid (and not buy it), I've got plenty and would be willing to give you a spool full. Then if you like it, you can go buy some.

For all of you guys that like mono/fluro line; Lake Fork Tackle is developing a new line that I've been testing for Ronnie for the past 6 months. I have only one word for it so far -- AMAZING. First, it's hi-viz orange and can be seen in any light condition. Second, it's without a doubt the strongest 6# I've ever fished. Third, it absolutely does not have a memory and has a very slick feel to it. I've never used a better line for dock shooting. The only problem is that Ronnie refused to put it up for sale until he's totally satisfied that it will be the best of the best. I told him last night that he was 'there'. He answered me by giving me a couple more spools and requested my feed-back. Whenever he gets pleased with his product, I'll let you guys know, cause it's gonna rock the crappie fishing line world.

Thanks Guy.. I made the purchase of the FUSED and it is absolutely amazing stuff. flehan It is by far the best line for my spin cast setups that I have used. I bought it in 6 lb test spooled up two of my rods and hit the local pond for a test. There is no kinks or curls. I was throwing a blue fox spinner and bomber square A. I nailed some quality bass and the line is in the same shape as it was when I spooled it. I pitched some 1/16th oz crappie jigs to see how it would fair for some dock shooting and to catch a few gills and it was fantastically smooth and light. banana
Thanks a ton for the lead.

stucky76,

What kind of knot are you using between your braid and fluoro?

I'm gonna miss her when I get home....
