I currently fish a local park and in recent trips have been catching more crappie than any other fish...Avg size is 3"

If there is water...I will find the fish in it

Crappie can be the death card in small water. They have a bad growth/baitfish ratio, meaning they eat way more than they grow and if your catching a bunch of 3" fish-they're probably over populated. Solution? Flathead catfish.

I agree. Crappie in small water can overpopulate fast.

talking to the parks and rec they have noticed that the perch population has declined terribly, however the bass are getting harder to find they feel due to they are full on crappie. the only catfish in there are bullhead cats

a couple flathead catfish will take care of the bullheads and the crappie

The problem with using flatheads in ponds is they won't stop at crappie or bullheads...they will eat everything, including the bluegills and bass. Unless the pond is fairly large, several acres, they will eliminate everything that swims there...and even in larger ponds with just a few of them, fish elimination is very real possibility.

Stock them with extreme caution.....sometimes the cure is worse than the sickness.

Check this recent thread.....I have seen many, many other examples. Use care.

Flip side on Crappie ponds is that Crappie can grow HUGE in ponds! Many records come out of ponds, like the 4+ ones you hear about rarely.

Not to be de but Meadowlark is right, you do not want to put an Op in that pond.

I have a 3/4 acre pond with some of everything in it. I got 1 2 pound crappie out of it, and several less than 8 inches. I don't want them in there, but plenty of bait for them to eat.

I think its a crime to toss them out on the bank, but keeping room for my big cats and bass. I do feed the fish, so it's likely I can keep more fish that way..
