ANY CHART (excepting basic HotMaps or Classic charts) purchased on or after Oct 1, 2010, is eligible for the coming updates-for FREE. I would say that the iphone app charts would be classified under basic hotmaps, but i am not positive

topwatermadman, another part of your question about the map cards is "Hot Spots" is a Lowrance product and Navionis "Hotmaps" is a Navionics product. Humminbird products won't read Hot Spots, but they will read Navionics software. Lowrance products will read both.

I have an older Navionics premium chip (2007 or 2008) and a 2009 premium and 2009 platinum chips. The older premium chip does have creek channels marked unlike the 2009 chips, but it does not have ANY detail for the Mexico side of Falcon. I did not check Amistad. The 2009 chips are similar except for the 3D on the platinum. The contour detail is more accurate on the newer chips. If you have Lowrance, I would recommend using the Lake Insight maps on your unit if you have them to help locate creek channels, pond dams, house foundations, old roads, etc. Then get the newer Navionics chip for the contour.
