Havnt had any problems with vanish, but i dont care for the transition.I have landed dd's on vanish and a ton of five to nine pound fish out of a consevation lake i manage.Just watch for freys and retie, also be sure to wet the knot before you tighten this helps a lot.

I had big problem with vanish breaking on hookset when I first tried it. They may have improved it since then but I will never know. I seguar invizx and I really liked carbon pro but just don't find it much anymore.
One thing you mentioned is finesse fishing with it ant I think 17lb is WAY to heavy for that. I use 8 or 10 lb for my finesse applications and some people even use 6.

Vanish is the worst line I ever tried. I broke on 4 consecutive hooksets. Praise God I was just fun fishing and not in a tournament.

They call it Vanish for a reason.
Your lures will Vanish Your fish will Vanish and so on and so on.

I use Seguar invizx and Berkley 100% fluro and like both. I fish Amistad alot and these lines make a difference. If fishing in stained water use a low stretch copoly or mono or even braid.

I won't even use Vanish for backing, my breakoffs costs me some serious $$$

Stick with the following and you'll do well:
1. Seagar Invizx 2. Berkley 100% 3. LFT Florohybrid (I know it's not 100% floro, but we don't have gin clear water here in TX, and the stuff just rocks! )

There are a number of other things that can cause that other than a bad line. Old line, worn out line, an improperly tied knot, etc.
Personally, I fish a lot of Vanish and have never broken it on a hookset. And trust me, I believe in a strong hook set. I usually get a couple inches of air in my hooksets.
I've been fishing it so long, I haven't tried the other stuff, but I'll put it on some reels and give 'er a whirl.
