Alright guys, I've about got a boat bought. This time around, I'd really like to get some good electronics. I've been looking at the new graphs. While I don't understand all the lingo just yet, here's a few questions I have:

1. I want a good unit for the deck and a good unit for the console. If I like the Lowrance units, are people really spending $1500-$1900 for these two units?

2. If i decide to go with one unit, where would you put the better unit?

3. It seems like if you want the structure scan feature, it is an add-on feature. Is that correct? If so, that the same thing as down scan.

4. Does the hummingbird product come with the structure scan feature? I would consider the bird, but have heard folks having issues.

As you can see, I'm really clueless on all this. Back in the old days, a good depth finder was a flasher and a rod with a large weight and treble hook. I would appreciate all the information given.

2. If i decide to go with one unit, where would you put the better unit? At the console on a ram mount. You can turn it around and still see it from the bow if you need to.

3. It seems like if you want the structure scan feature, it is an add-on feature. Is that correct? If so, that the same thing as down scan. Structure Scan is what Lowrance calls their side imaging and the down scan. Both are part of the add-on

4. Does the hummingbird product come with the structure scan feature? I would consider the bird, but have heard folks having issues. The humminbird units include the side imaging and the down scan. No need to buy an add-on like the lowrance units. I've had no problems with my bird.

As you can see, I'm really clueless on all this. Back in the old days, a good depth finder was a flasher and a rod with a large weight and treble hook. I would appreciate all the information given.

I just put a HDS 8 on the console and a 5 on the bow. THe bigger screen should go on console because most side imaging is done with big motor. A HDS 5 is fine for the bow because you will primarily use downscan or the 2d sonar while fishing

I just got my HB side scan unit. Still learning but love it so far. I chose it over Lowrance because of better screen resoluation and an all in one unit, no need to buy add ons.

thanks boys, this is a good start....

I would consider HB but I read where screens were freezing....and one side of the si would read fine, but the other side would not work? any info on these issues?

Humminbird were the pioneers of the side-imaging technology.
I have a Humminbird side-imaging unit (798) and wish I owned the 1197. The 1197 has a 10" screen and boy it makes a difference as you can see the features so clearly. However, even on my 5" I can see so many cool things. For example, the last time I was at the lake I was fishing in 5ft of water and I could see fish within 20 feet of boat following a school of shad. Amazing!

I have a 997 and 1197 and had no issues with either unit. No regrets and I have had them for about a year, the bigger screen really does make it alot easier to see.

HB from shut-up and fish. Save money and works great and if you have to buy Lowrance retail instead of buying a HB from shut-up you'll save at least 40%. I called David and met him that afternoon and picked my unit. If you need help with an install PM me, I've put in three and would like to do more.

PKirby,

Here's a helpful tutorial on side imaging. I've owned both Birds and Lowrance. I'm running all Birds now. Why? Free downloads of upgrades, outstanding customer service and far fewer problems than Lowrance.

I have the HB 797 on my boat and it works fine. Even with the small screen it's a vast improvement over sonar for identifying underwater structure - the trouble you are with the HB units you are talking about has been because of damage to the transducers and not trouble with the units themselves - I knocked mine off sliding off a stump and it got banged against the motor - It did not appear to be damaged but when I remounted it I had the exact problem you describe I still have the down image but sidescan only works on the right side - I'm pretty sure it can happen just as easily with a Lowrance unit as a Humminbird.
