Well just that one bad experiance made me never go back. Most of my reels are now Shimanos and I've never had a problem with one. Now im sure that a Revo is top of the line but I just havent tried one yet.

I was going to try the Skeet Reese reel but bought a Caenan instead. I love all his rods tho!

Thanks, I think I may go for the one that's a bit shorter than that cuz I fish on other peoples boats so an 8ft rod might not work to well.

I got the black max combo. Not bad for the price. Had some issues with the reel after some usage but it all cleared up after I cleaned it. Have had the spinning version of the black max for over a decade that still works pretty well also.

I have a Black Max and it works great. Can't beat the combo for 50 bucks or so! As long as you lube/oil it constantly it is nice for the price! Plus it is Abu, they don't make anything I would call junk!

It is really only good for throwing heavy baits, IMO. Casting into the wind or a light lure, or heaven forbid the combination of the two, and it does not perform well at all.

I have 2 for throwing lipless baits. They throw a mile and since my hade is always on the reel handle they hold up well. For everything else I use revo sx or winch.
Retirement best job ever.

I bought a Black Max combo from Cabelas about a year ago for around $65. I use it with 15 lb. mono every time out and have never had a problem. And you can throw light stuff - I throw 1/8 oz. buzzbaits and shakey heads and 3/16 oz. finese jigs frequently. Certainly not a high-end, life-time reel but a good working reel for a good price if it suits what you're doing.
In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

i can throw a 1/8 jig about 100 yards with heavy line and after about 20 times of fishing with it its still smoother then ever and that 8 foot flipping stick is good but i also use a heavy all star rod
