I am going to tie up some for black bass fighing for the spring and am not finding much help online. The Zagging Zook appears to be quite similar in constructing the head, but it appears that the Pole Dancer may have all the materails tied to the hook and a space in the bottom of the popper body hollowed out so that it can be slipped down over the wing material. Just some guessing on my part.

actually all the material is tied on a tube which is then inserted into the upper portion of the head. the only thing tied to the hook is lead wire, chenille to cover lead wire and the head.
if i knew anything about foam, i could easily make a mold from the orginal pole dancer and make the head with some sort of foam (preharding)
imo the hardest part of this fly will be making the head just right and then being able to repeat it on several flies.

I was planninig on using a hard popper body cut similarly to the Zagging Zook. Tying the materials on a tube and inserting that into a hole in the back of the popper should work pretty well.
Thanks for the info.

I got a half dozen responses to the subject. Each would surely get me moderated.

Here's a first pass imitation I threw together after seeing the Pole Dancer's action. First, it had great action in the kiddie pool test with short quick strips. Second, it appears the action stems from the front floating head and a decent weight way back on the hook. This one is simply a Blado's Crease Fly attached backwards with a little trim. It has a pretty good lead wire weight at the rear, a rattle on bottom of the hook and some estaz over the wire and the rear of the rattle. I added some flash and a weed guard for style and just stuck some small backing rod (round insulation from Lowes) in the front of the head; but for making several I'd go with the canned insulating foam and just cram it in there and shape it a little before it sets (rubber glves and crystal clear cascade diswasher spot additive). So, going with a pretty long hook, say a Mustad 34011 like this one, rear weighting and popping nose should serve you well. Hope this was helpful.

just fyi putting weed gaurds on flies normally counter acts with any side to side motion due to the fact the weed gaurd acts as a rudder and stabilizes the fly.

Ahhhh. Good point on the weed guard "rudder effect". Makes perfect sense.
