After my 5.4 disaster I am not going near a Ford until these engines get some miles on them. Even then I will probably apply my rule that if I cannot easily access the spark plugs I walk.

I remember a late 70's early 80's Chevy I think it was called a Monza (NOT the corvair version) that you had to loosen the motor mounts and jack the engine up in order to get the rear sparkplug out on one side of the v-8 version.....

Since 2004 there has been two 4.6L a 2valve and 3valve. along about 2008 they quit offering the v6 and went to the base motor 4.6L 2valve, the 4,6L 3valve was an upgrade since 04 most of the Lariat packages were the 5.4L 3valve all of the King Ranch were 5.4L 3valve. Ironically the comercial fleet vans only come to this date with either the 4.6L 2valve or the 5.4L 2 valve (yes they still make it). We have one of the vans with the 4.6L and looking at a 3/4 ton vehicle loaded it won't get out of it's own way. One thing I learned a long time ago whether it's a boat or a truck don't cheat yourself when it comes to power. Afterall you wouldn't put a 150hp outboard on a 21' boat rated for a 225hp and expect alot of positive results would you? Allways get the max-power available you'll never be disappointed. I knew they still made the 4.6L 2v but i didnt think the 3v was available until a few years ago. Learn something new every day!

I can't see getting a whole lot of torque out of it, but then one never knows, does one? 420 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,500 rpm according to the article. Not bad for a gasser.

Generating lots of power out of a small displacment engine is a good recipe for short engine life if you ask me.

I remember seeing an article a few years ago in Bass and Walleye boats that touted the Ford V-6 with the tow package as being a really good towing machine for up to 20 foot bass and walleye type boats. The key was the towing package which got you like a 3.90:1 gear ratio or somewhere in that vicinity. I'm just not buying a small c.i. motor, v-6 or v-8, after having the 4.6 v-8 in my 2000 Expedition. I get better mileage with my 4wd diesel pickup than I did with the 2wd gas burning expedition.

Heck if you are going to go up to 3.9 gears you might as well just go with a V8 and 3.55s and probably get the same mileage.

I will personally never own a full sized pickup without a v8 unless it is a 6 cylinder Cummins!!!! If the govt has their way none of us will be towing anything as they are so busy trying to cram 6 cyl fuel getters and electric vehicles up our tail next thing we know we will all be forced to drive an electric pos. I am not supporting it and ask anybody that tows a trailer to do the same. The govt's way of skating around our almost 3 times over priced fuel That btw is the main cause for this bad economy is rather then to put a cap on prices at the pump is unstead alt fuel, alt fuel vehicles ect all a bunch of [censored] sorry for the rant but the subject of fuel is my worst pet peeve.

Interesting how people mention inflated or high gas prices all the time??? Here is some food for thought...
The average price of a gallon of gas from 1918 to the present is $2.39. This $2.39 is in 2010 inflation adjusted dollars. So it is safe to say that anytime that the price of gas is above $2.39 in inflation adjusted terms it is expensive and whenever it is below that price it is cheap.
So, when it reached $4.00 a gallon in July 2008 it was expensive. And with the average for 2010 at $2.73 it is much closer to the average.
So we are not that far off folks!!

My '97 Ranger with the 4L V6 could barely do 65mph while towing my 17' Aluminum boat. It would probably explode if it was towing a fiberglass boat. I've since gone to the 2008 F150 STX 4x4, with the 4.6L V8. Pulls like the boat is not even there. Gas milage while towing appears to be the same.

15 years ago, you had a 460 CI (7.5L)engine producing 250HP and 420ftlbs of torque....and averaging about 10mpg on a good tank. Yep, no replacement for displacement.
